Did anyone else think Klopp was talking about Can last night when he said players were waiting to extend contracts until after we got CL football.

Anyone got any printable thoughts on Mad Alberto?

Last night really was a demonstration of how one player can inhabit two quite distinct worlds which alternative by the minute - going forward he was great, some good incisive runs, passes and cross. He definitely added something to the attack and yet his ability to get caught out of position as he wanders inside without looking behind him when out of possession keeps creating very easy chances for the opposition. I think I'd keep him daft as it sounds but move him forward, it would mean fewer starts but as a speedy left wing sub I'm sure he could be kept happy on the bench with a few picture puzzles.

He was the furthest forward in added time during a Liverpool attack - he's great craic

I got the impression he was talking about incoming players having CL related clauses?

Here's what he said according to the LFC website (http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/272949-yippee-jurgen-klopp-on-lfc-s-champions-league-return):

"It’s a big influence on the transfer market, especially if we do it more often. I said I think before the game, if you talk to a player, they really often [mention it]… especially players we talk to because we don’t have to talk to players which are not better than our players because it’s difficult to find. I know a few people think differently, but we do a lot of work and it’s not that easy to find 20 players in this position that are better, 20 players in that position that are better. But if you talk to them, they say if you would play in the Champions League it would be really interesting because the club is great, the manager is not too bad and all that stuff. Or even if you try to extend a contract with a player in the squad, [they might say], ‘Yeah, I want to play Champions League’ and I always think ‘It’s your job to do it with us together, so don’t ask that we do a job and you cannot play Champions League – do it with us together.’ That’s what this team did and that’s why I am so happy about it. 14 months’ hard work and we did it – nice!"

I have to say, to me that reads more like general comments - 'it's a big influence on the transfer marker, especially if we do it more often' and 'try to extend a contract with a player in the squad, they might say...' then actually saying that now we've qualified, we'll tie up contracts and sign new players. I hope we do, of course, but I still think it's very possible we don't buy anyone else...

If that was about Can he did his part get us there :)

That's clearly aimed at Can and it appears he took the message on board.

Draxlers agent was at the game last night, unfortunately he also represents Firmino so I'm expecting a bid from Barca of 50m spread over 10 years with 8 clauses pertaining to the La Liga titles, CL, Ballon D'or etc to be made shortly.

He pretty much showed he isnt a left back last night and should play much further forward

I think if we played the 3-at-the-back formation that seems to be in fashion at the moment he'd make a great wing back on the left flank since his defensive responsibilities would be a little less

Wijnaldum is not about flair, he's about doing the simple things brilliantly and mostly in a forward direction. Thought he was great last night.
    .

I thought he was really poor in the first half. Kept miscontrolling the ball and giving it away. He has generally been quite poor so far this season, as has the whole midfield. Last night was an improvement though.

I'd have to watch it again, but my recollection is that he appeared to be getting caught out, but in fact he was busting a gut to cover the other central midfielders that should have been busting a gut to be on the ball.

In principle I agree with this. Hoever, we don't have 2 half decent centre halves (do we even have 1?), three at the back would be madness for us.

    Indeed

About the midfield, while we are playing 4 3 3 without Coutinho or Lallana in the midfield 3 whoever does play in CM gets a pass from me to a large extent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,497 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

It's a hard midfield to pick and I dont think we have ever really got it right. We're too "all or nothing", the only game I can remember us ever managing well under Klopp was last season against City at home (I think that was the game anyhow).

We don't have a player who can play sitting/defensive midfield.

As such, and due to the narrowness of having only three in midfield, and because we have 3 up top and attack minded full backs, we get exposed a lot. That's not really going to change a lot, whether we get Van Dyke or whoever else. It is a system thing: no 100% defensively responsible midfielder, a poor defensive full back in Moreno, weak centre halves and a dodgy keeper. It's going to be another interesting tops turvy season.

Does last night provide some inkling of hope that a Can and Henderson midfield might not actually be as unworkable as previously thought?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,928 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

    A 4 2 3 1 or a 4 2 1 2 1 type formation with the players we now.

    Mignolet

    Cylne
    Matip
    Ragnar
    Robertson

    Can
    Wijnaldum

    Coutinho

    Mane/Salah
    Salah/Mane

    Fun Bobby

That's the kind of team and formation I'd like to see us play this season if we don't add.

Replace Ragnar of course if we sign VVD.

Nope for me, Hoffenheim made it too easy for both in terms of attacking while they did slice through the middle a couple of times themselves. Can and Hendo really would like to get forward but clearly that's reckless and even if one stays at home neither is really cut out for the job of sitting. If only there was a player out there who had the positional sense and talent to do that job....

VVD, Keita & Draxler in. Coutinho out.
Pipe dream but I'd be happy with that.

It's now being reported that VVD met with both City and Chelsea without permission before handing in a transfer request.

A public apology from both club must be coming soon.

I see a story that draxler s agent was at the game last night. Down the end of the article it mentions that he is also Firmino s agent. No possibility that he went to watch his player. He went to a game to arrange the sale of draxler as you do.

Watched the highlights again this morning. That 3rd goal was filthy football pornography. If we could just add a bit more quality to this team we could challange for major honours

    I wouldn't.

I think we should sell Coutinho but I'd want more than VVD, Keita & Draxler in if we do.

Keita & VVD should be done regardless of Coutinho so swapping Draxler for Coutinho seems like a step backwards.

I think we need an extra midfielder as well as Keita and also another centre half on top of VVD. Lovren isn't good enough to be near the squad so we need a 3rd choice one to come in too, in my opinion.

There seems to be a lot of talk about how we need Keita. I know nothing about the player, but on Wikipedia I am surprised to see he seems to have quite a high goals to games ratio for what I assumed was a defensive midfielder.

We have enough midfielders that are better going forward than they are sitting and protecting. I hope we (as in those involved in transfer targets) have this in their minds when they are putting together a shopping list with Klopp.

We really do not need another box-to-box or attacking midfielder before we sign a for-purpose defensive, intelligent, reliable, positionally sound player to protect our defense.

You know we are not getting keita, no interest in draxler and a possibility that we will have no more signings. So saying we need at least four is not realistic and we better keep Coutinho as there is no chance of replacing him.

Transfer window closes this day next week.

I'd love us to pull two big deals out of the bag but my gut tells me it just isn't going to happen. It's such a pity as a couple of solid defensive signings could really transform this team.

You know what, she is still alive and in it (at 90). Dot must be in a home for the 'bewildered with smokers cough' by now though.

Even more unexpected is the news that last nights win means Liverpool are the first English side to reach 200 victories in European competition (Barca and Real are on 300 and 298 mind you)
