Southampton will try to integrate him back in, and maybe hold off on having to get rid for one more season.

The most likely transfer activity is Coutinho leaving.

If that's the last action this window, then it's been a bad one.

You may be right, but I kind of think - why wouldn't they deal with us?

He'd be the most expensive defender ever, they'd make a huge profit, and, let's be honest, whether VVD is at Southampton or not, they'll still finish in that 7th - 14th range in the PL

    :P

They're the exact same sort of deal, one is as likely as the other I'd say.

Not uncommon for players to go for medicals and talk personal terms on deadline day before the transfer details have been properly worked out between the two clubs.

If it's true they must have had a nod from The Saints that they'll listen to offers.

Question is very simple.....are the new Chinese shareholders willing to pay him if he isnt playing or will they cash in and give in.

Cant see the deal being done if I am honest.....

Even if Coutiniho stays do you think it's been a good one?

I just don't understand how we could go a full transfer window without making a single bid on a CB or making any significant defensive signings, considering what happened last year.

How many points did ridiculous defensive mistakes cost us last year? Genuine question.

Any update on when the Spanish transfer window shuts & if Danny Ings is available this season?

Arsenal have lodged a 100 Million Euro bid for Lemar.

    Think thats far too high....

    Match it.

Lemar is playing for France tonight, you would imagine he's not going to be available for anything pre-match at this stage and it'll be very tight post-match.

Can get clearance pending a medical i think

Arsenal have had their €100m bid accepted but it's now down to the player to choose where he wants to go. Surely if we match the bid we can get him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,182 ✭✭✭Sappy404

I don't see us matching that bid. Arsenal will have sold two first-team regulars to get him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,294 ✭✭✭LiamoSail

Id rather see the €100m go on a centre half or keeper

Was only yesterday Joyce reported we have 175m planned to spend today. We knew from our first bid for Lemar that this was Monaco's asking price. If the player would rather come here and we have the money then I see no reason not to.

No chance we'll match that, good luck.

If Arsenal can get him, he available it's just whether we are willing to pay what they are.
A chance to stop a player we want going to a rival. It's happened to us before, hoping we can be on the right side of this time. This is a chance to use being in the Champions League to sway a player our way over a rival. Do it!

I think some people are losing there minds on transfer deadline day.
Unless we badly needed a CM 90m for Lemar is insane money. Silva cost 44m for City.

We need a CB badly & not looking at someone except VVD is terrible management from Klopp & FSG.

Manolas is one CB who would be available for 40-50 I'm sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭Irishmale0399

€100m on VVD would be my preferance at this stage of the day...

Offer €75m for Lemar and see what happens....maybe he can tell them Liverpool or nothing.

That's crazy money for someone that wouldn't even be a guaranteed starter for us. That would get Aubemeyang!

Silva joined City 7 years ago so it's pointless to compare fees.

VVD did not switch agents, some reporter got their arse and elbow mixed up, so disregard that.

Clearly Liverpool/Chelsea were part funding this Lemar deal as they knew City would come for Sanchez.

Bernado Silva he joined last May for 43m. He was in the same Monaco side as Lemar & was just as good if not better last season.

He'd be more of a guaranteed starter for us than Aubameyang. With Coutinho and Lallana out he'd walk right into the team, and with them back fit the 3 of them would be competing for a spot. Coutinho may be gone by tomorrow and if not he'll be gone next year anyway.

    Bernardo Silva

Anyway I'd rather we spent €100m on Van Dijk than Lemar, I'm fairly content with our attacking options as is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

€100m on Van Dijk? I'm a strong proponent for the idea of it being better to be looking at them, than for them, but €100m is a bit much. Surely we can stretch until Jan and actually do some CB homework in the meantime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,740 ✭✭✭✭MD1990

I think we should have signed Pepe on a free in the summer. Still a very good CB despite his age.

Harder to implement pressing when you're down to 10 men though

Especially when he hasn't kicked a ball in 8 months.

I think we're all victims of putting van Dijk on a pedestal in recent times, tbh. I refuse to believe another defender cannot be found, with that sort of money, who can come in and adapt to our style of play and improve us.

He is rarely sent off. Only something like twice in his career. He is the master of the single yellow (and needling opponents).

No idea how good Matt Spiro is but I like what he says so I'm posting it:

"Monaco accept #Arsenal's £90m bid for Thomas Lemar. However am told player would rather join #Liverpool"

They would both have to wait a few weeks to see which of the front 3 tires first.

Auba is far more proven and less risky for that sort of money.
Lemar was on no-ones radar until we bid for him...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,392 ✭✭✭GiftofGab

David Thompson, ex-Liverpool player just tweeted that VVD is a “done-deal”. Not sure what he knows that nobody else does.
I reckon if we get Kendrick then Coutinho is gone this transfer window.

Arsenal have been in for him all summer. He was integral to Monaco's title win and Champions League semi final finish. He's hardly a nobody.

Let's not pretend he just loves Liverpool more. This is what we wanted CL football for, so we can win these player battles over other CL clubs (based on our history, manage and style of play), and certainly over non CL clubs...

What's the point of him now? Even if he got a UK work permit, so what? He can't be too good given his modest displays on loan.

Alexis Sanchez is staying at Arsenal. That is the message from the club and it would now be a shock if there were to be any late turns to this infernal saga (it takes a toll, you know!). Manchester City came in earlier today with a second offer for the Chile striker – of £55m, plus £5m in add-ons – but it has come down to Arsenal being able to sign a new attacking player. Quite simply, they look to have run out of time on that front. They wanted Monaco’s Thomas Lemar and the French club demanded that they pay 100m euros for him. Which Arsenal indicated they were willing to do. But there appears to be insufficient time for Arsenal to now agree a package with Lemar, particularly as he is in the France squad for this evening’s game against Holland – which kicks off in about three hours. Were Arsenal able to get Lemar, they would have been inclined to take the £60m from City for Sanchez. But it is unlikely to happen now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,953 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Okay so Monaco look willing to sell and there's now reportedly no competition for Lemar.

In all seriousness, the summer transfer window should be closed by now and what fcukwit timed the closing with an international break!

Wonder would Arsenal fans rather have Lemar for five years (or a massive transfer fee if he left them before that) or Sanchez for just one more year and watch him walk out the door for nothing next summer?

If Lemar has told Monaco it's us or nobody, all we have to do now is sweep in and match the bid. If the club give up completely on signing VVD in the next couple of hours, I suspect it might just happen.

He wasn't being talked about as a key target because there were no links between us and him. Nearly everyone here has been saying Coutinho is either off this summer or next and we need an adequate replacement for him. Initially there were rumours of Draxler but it seems Lemar is the actual plan.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

So then is it really player wants CL football and Arsenal saving face? Looks like it - it takes no time to agree a deal in principle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

Ha. Couthinho and Sanchez with big pusses on them now because Lemar had to go play a match.
