I have an aluminium fixture in which I want to tap a M5 hole.

What is the finest pitch of M5 thread that is realistic for aluminium, its v easy get taps with a smaller pitch than the M5x0.8 standard.

    The standard M5 is M5 X 0.8.

Ideal situation would be to helicoil my fixture with M5x0.4 helicoil but I don't think such a thing exists.

M4 would also be an option but the standard M4 is M4x0.7

Ditto, can you give some detail on what you're trying to achieve?

I am not sure any insert is available with finer than M5 x 0.8 which is already a fine pitch. You could look for Rivnuts or Timeserts but again I am not sure they are available in any pitch less than 0.8 in M5. The type of aluminium that you are tapping will also have a bearing on what thread size you can use.

I'm nearly 20 year in the game I'm all right on my choice of threads :)

Sorry, that was supposed to be directed to the OP; I was agreeing with you!
