MBA Mid 2013 SSD Not recognised

    Hello all,

    I bought a mid 2013 mba four years ago in Canada. Few weeks ago I got the question mark folder. The mac would then intermittentently work from them on. It would turn on and then freeze after 5 min. I brought it in to compu b to get diagnosed and have told me that the SSD has completely failed and quoted 400 euro. I bought a second hand 128gb online and fitted it myself. So now the problem;

    1) when I turn it on, it only sometimes recognises that the SSD is there. When it does, I click on the "macintosh HD" icon and it starts up. The SSD came with sierra on it. After 10 mins it freezes and crashes. I restart it and the icon will not show up again

    2) let's say I try the internet recovery mode. The computer will download the os and it will then prompt me to select a hard drive to save it on. Low and behold there is no hard drive to select. I then go into disk utility and the hard drive is not there either

    So could this be a possible dodgy connection? If so I can't find the connection for sale anywhere.

    I bought the SSD of a reputable seller on eBay who gives a 45 day warranty. They also assure me that the SSD is fully tested before being sent out.

    I've read online that I could purchase a SATA to USB cable. If i buy this, could this rule out a dodgy SSD connection, as the SSD will be hard wired in via USB.

    Or could have compub steered me if the wrong direction with there diagnostic? I don't really think so as they are apple approved vendors.

    Any help would be much appreciated

    Regards

    Try resetting the PRAM and/or selecting the SSD in startup disk preferences, but you probably need to re-format the drive. I wouldn't have trusted anything the seller preinstalled on it. See if you can make a recovery usb, boot from it, reformat the SSD and reinstall Mac OS. If that doesn't fix it then it's a hardware problem.

    What kind of SSD is it? Did you check that it's compatible?

    I'd echo what sad professor says and definitely try and format the SSD elsewhere before plopping it back into the machine and see does that work...

    Ok, so bit of an update. My machine was diagnosed incorrectly. Shop is now saying that my SSD works fine as they checked it on another machine.

    So now they are saying it's the connector and that it will cost me 600 euro to replace because they have to replace the entire logic board?

    Does this make sense? Is it possible to replace just the connector ??

    You need someone who offers board component level repair:
    Ideally you would find an Irish Louis Rossmann but these guys might be worth a try - http://www.applesupport.ie/ or https://www.electronicrepair.ie/

    Best of luck!
