Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ah I know what you mean about staying with it, but tbh I've bigger fish to fry at the moment with the elective interim coming up. Need to find the time to study for that properly[/quotep

Ye I know what you mean. what one are you doing? I picked tax so I’ve just been catching up on the various tax heads

Funny you mention burnout as last year that happened to me with cap 2. 4 weeks study leave doing 12 hours a day taking concentration medication and doing nothing else but study and ended up failing both. Day leave for each of the repeats no medication and passed.

Just feel this year that I need to keep tapping away especially with audit and tax as I didn’t do them last year.

I take it from this and your “wonder what I missed” in the previous conversation that you’re trying to place at FAE?

Till after the interim is out of the way I don't really see myself focusing on the finals. One thing at a time imo.

    I'm doing tax also.

Do you work in Tax? Some  people have told me im at a disadvantage doing tax and not working in it. Also did you go to the lecture yesterday I was sick so couldn't attend and was hoping to watch it online but it doesn't seem to be up.

No I don't work in Tax but I don't let that bother me. What is done in practice and what is required in an exam tends to be different. With study hopefully we will be fine. I wasn't in the class either.

What approach are you going to take to studying tax elective over the coming weeks?

Do you get comfort from hearing what other people are doing? I don't mean that in a rude way, just trying to understand how other people work.

Not a chance! No interest in that, just trying to make an easy summer for myself by front loading on the marks and avoiding the regret of wishing I had studied lol

Just watched the online video there about the change in the marking scheme and I get confused even more every time. How hugely different is it from last year? Everyone’s thoughts would be great

Same marking scheme as CAP2. Average 50% overall to pass.

Never mind what happened in previous years; it's irrelevant. Just focus on getting to 50%

Tbh, I haven't started studying yet. I will probably work my way through the applicable standards. I never really have a plan in place, I just start and go with it. I'd be happy to link in with you via message if there is anything you want to talk through.

I would definitely like to keep this thread active anyway as I am in industry nobody here is doing FAEs so I feel very isolated compared to people in other firms.

Agreed. I find this forum great. Even for peace of mind at times.

Some really good results in the AAFRP above, well done. Got a respectable 11.30 myself. I did a solid 5 weeks study for it. TBH I thought I was going to get higher (around 12.50) mark but I'll take what I get.
Doing APM for the elective and going to start studying this weekend for the interim. Going to watch the online lectures (I find them much better than going to them in person) and create my folder from there using the notes provided on the CAI website. Will only have time for study on the weekends really considering it's busy season but I'll get whatever hours I can in. Anyone else doing APM? What's your approach going to be like for the elective? Any advice is appreciate.

Probably just do a lot of past papers with a file of notes beside me until I feel comfortable!

Are there past papers for the elective available or do you mean the August exams?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭ACAguy

It's so difficult doing anything in the evening by the time you get home eat and empty your head after a days work.
Elective in the thing that should probably be focused on most over the next few weeks but also don't want to fall behind on the core.
Has anyone had cross marking lectures yet as i'm meant to have one this sunday and want to know if it's worth attending.

Does anyone find CAI very hard to deal with. Emailed Fae people twice since Monday to ask about the cancelled classes being rescheduled and online lectures. No reply

    Yes. They rarely answer emails.

Judging by my friends, the only way to get a response is to email from your work account and copy whoever looks after learning in your firm. They literally ignore everything else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭ACAguy

They said the classes missed last week finance 1& 2 and Cross marking workshop 1 & 2 may not be rescheduled which makes no sense at all
They are also updating their platform and will have updated online lectures as soon as they can. A joke really

I sent a mail yesterday, got a reply this morning that they hope to have an email circulated this afternoon/ tomorrow regarding the new classes.

I'm not going to hold my breath!

Update  on the classes cancelled by the snow.

Finance 1 & 2. Will not be rescheduled we are now required to watch it online. The current online lecture in relation to this was uploaded 3 years ago which is a joke.

Cross Marking 1 & 2 Will be held on the 15th April which in my opinion is ridiculous as it's the last full non work day before all of our interim assessment.

I also asked them to uploaded Tax Elective 3 &4 to be watched online as I missed the class on 18th February and they have yet to do so.

Is everyone agreed that it takes them so long to do anything?

The finance thing is a joke.

Can anyone who's annoyed about it raise the issue in work? CA don't care what we say but if all the firms start complaining they'll care.

We were scheduled to have 3 finance sessions. That's sessions; not lectures. Just 3 and they've cancelled 2 of them. It's ridiculous. I wouldn't have said finance was many people's strong point so to lose 2/3 of the lectures is a joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭ACAguy

Ye it's not really fair at all. it's 2/3 of the finance classes they could very easily find a day. Finance definitely isn't my strong point. Cant imagine its that hard to get the lecturer to find one day over the next month or so considering otherwise they just expect us to spend the hours watch a 2015 recording online instead

Bigkid, i would loveeeee you APM notes if the offer is still standing. Any tips on how to study for the interim assessment? What is even examinable?

Do people still plan to attend this weekends lectures even though the Interim assessment is in 2 weeks?

I'm wondering how I'm going to manage to attend the two simultaneous lectures they have me down for on Saturday. They're both for different APM sessions so there's no excuse.

I have tax 5 & 6 which is not on my interim exam and also cross marking workshops so it would seem like a waste of 2 days study so close to the exam

That's them, thanks a million. Also does anyone know what the Cross Marking Workshops involve? Are they mandatory? I have one on Sunday but I could really do with taking the weekend to Study for the Tax elective

Just revising and is it just me or is the online lecture #1 cut short for APM elective?

Also I am looking for the notes for the IA session and can't see them. Would anyone be able to share them with me please?

    Thanks in advance.

They finally got some sense and rearranged the finance lectures

Lecture 1 is Friday 25th May group A and Friday 1 June for group b and c. Then 2 & 3 is June 10th for everyone

Ya not too bad,i have read most of the chapters and trying to get through as many questions as I can from now til the exam How are you finding it?

One thing that's confusing me- Say for example in case study 10 Angela O'Neill. It states that Angela owns the shops out of which her business trades (which I take this as she owns them personally), yet in the solution in order for her to incorporate her business (and claim Sec.600) she must also transfer these premises. Now I know one of the conditions of sec.600 is she must transfer all of the business assets but why is this if she owns the premises personally, are these not seperate to the assets of the sole trade?
    Hope this isn't confusing!

firstly where is this question you are referring to?
I have just been trying to work through the 4 past exam papers and also question banks. My notes are all over the place and i don't know the best way to lay out my folder for the exam or what to bring in

I’m doing the APM interim on Saturday and I was just wondering about putting in an appendix if we get an investment appraisal indicator, or just including as part of the memo/report. If I go the appendix route, I can’t decide how many pages to leave to answer the rest of the indicators. Any suggestions?

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 pixie11123

What did everyone think of the interim? Sat APM - very tight for time. Recommended 10 years at retail if they could get such a lease (NPV 5 years ~Breakeven per store vs £100,000 per store at 10 years). The last 2 indicators were very much scenario specific so notes weren't of much use I thought.

I was the same: go for it with the lease break option and likely pull out after 10 years. No need for the notes for any of the questions.

Did anyone bring the ethics of the casino gambling machines into it? I didn't, but I have seen newspaper articles on the ethics of them...
