I see that Gamestop in the US are doing a subscription service where you pay 60 dollars and get unlimited rentals of used games. I read at the end of the 6 months, you can keep the last game you rented but sounds a bit too good.

Actually sounds like a good deal, I wonder if it would make it to over here.

Probably a while before it makes it over here.

And I assume there are going to be some form of limits, such as you can only take games that are €59.99 or less (and they mark anything newish between €60.00 and €65.00). Or the range will be kinda weak, GS near me mainly has Call o' Duty and Assassins Creed filling the pre-owned bin.

It could be a good system to clear some older games you never bought but I think a lot of people are hoping to use it as a way to play the latest releases and are going to be dissapointed.

You might want to google neogaf and see what's happened there in the last week before you use the site again :pac:

Doing a shared save file run of Pokémon Emerald over in Forum Games in a few weeks if anyone is interested.

We'll be trading saves after every gym, nicknames mandatory and it should be some good fun.

I don't generally pay much attention to these kinds of lists but it's Consolevania so it should be worth a shot.

Sonic Forces doesn't seem to be getting reviews as good as those of Generations and Colours, both of which are solid games. But I'd still get it just for the pleasure of creating an "OC" :D, and I might find it to be a decent experience. What are your thoughts on Forces?

It's reassuring to see the sonic cycle back in full swing :)

I want to make a character named after my arch-nemesis.

I'm so looking forward to IGN's review.

Just a follow up on the CD Projekt Red story of unhappy former employees. The staff turnover & uncertainty seems crazy but not when you consider the management above them.
Watching this made me think Cyberpunk is years off. Long video but pretty well researched.

Hmm, I was kinda surprised by IGN's score of 6.9/10 for Sonic Forces. With lower-scoring Sonic games, IGN was eager to diss them, giving a 4.8 to Unleashed, for example.
I haven't played Forces yet, but if there's a problem I can perceive from watching gameplay footage of it, it's the over-abundant use of automation. That, along with its sketchy controls.

I was watching the latest Fact Hunt about botched console launches. Never even knew about the 7800

Of course the Saturn is in there. But it got me thinking, would any company get away with doing a console launch the same way? Like at next year's E3 Sony just announce the PS5 is available at Best Buy now for $599. Would people rush to buy it?
I know there have been redesigned models announced and released pretty much on the same day but that's different.
Personally I think it would be a bad idea if, like the Saturn, they had already announced a much later date

The biggest issue was they launched it before the marketing campaigns even started. Nobody knew it was out and wouldn't find out about the surprise launch until a month later. Even then it would only be in specialist magazines covering month old E3 news. There was no internet then to spread the word.

Everything was wrong with that launch. It had a severse lack of games until the proposed launch. The Daytona port looked garbage next to ridge racer. Tekken was a really poor fighting game next to virtua fighter 2 but the arcade perfect PS1 port looked way better than VF1. When the stunning Saturn port of VF2 did come out it was too late.

You then had Bernie Stollar being poached by Sega from Sony in 1996. He but forward the same strategy for the Saturn as the PS1 had, no 2D games, RPGs or old looking games. So you had the PS1 in 1996 beginning to build up one of the most diverse and eclectic games libraries of any consoles, the Saturn was left with all its best 2D and RPG games languishing untranslated. It could have done well as a niche alternative to the PS1 but the library was severely reduced due to that stupid policy. Then FF7 happened in 1997 and made the lack of RPGs on the Saturn a huge negative.

I absolutely adore my Saturn and think it's a fantastic machine with an excellent library. However you absolutely have to get it modded to play imports as otherwise you end up with only a hand full of worthwhile games. In the US big chain stores were openly selling import titles as there was such a demand.

Cyberpunk is the new Half Life 3? ;)

I bought a Saturn on the promise of Grandia and Shining Force 3, decades later and they're still two of my favourite games ever but I still havent gotten over how much SEGA botched them both

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,387 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

They ****ed over Camelot so much that they now refuse to do any work for Sega since Shining Force 3. So an annoyance that Sega only released part one of SF3, thankfully shining force central eventually translated the other 2 parts.

As for Grandia... That game was better than the vast majority of Playstation RPGs and looked far better on Saturn than on PS1. Such a shame Sega never localised it. At least we got the PS1 version, it might not look as good but it's still a brilliant game.

20 years ago this Christmas I got my PS1. How is it 20 years already?

Formula 1 '97, Porsche Challenge and Die Hard Trilogy. Bought a light gun for Die Hard in the sales and that was me all set. Good times.

Got it for Christmas with Crash Bandicoot and Gran Turismo 2.

GT 2 is still the best racing game I've played.

Wipeout and Tekken for me. Christ I put some amount of hours into those 2 games. Good times!

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,174 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

I remember I got it for Christmas but my parents thought a game would be built into it (like Alex Kidd with the Master System) so when I opened it Christmas morning I had nothing to play on it other than the demo disc.

I don't even remember being disappointed, I played the demo disc non-stop for over a week until I got Crash! Think it had Overboard, Kurushi (still no idea what that game is about) Destruction Derby and a few others.

I remember bringing my new PS on nights on launch day, playing the @rse out of Wipeout, Ridge Racer and the demo disk.
    Just brilliant.

One of the first games I got with the PS1 was Resident Evil. Remember the intro "Wait this is an actual movie?", mind blown by the cutting edge graphics in-game and the excellent dialogue. Ok the last one's a lie.
Must have gotten Rage Racer pretty early on, 4 tracks (although you could reverse them) and was terrible at it. God I loved that game.

Demo disks. Jaysus! I think I still have my original demo disk for some strange reason. Must try and dig it out to see what is on there.

My first 2 PS1 games were GTA1 and Crash Bandicoot 2.

Yet I still played the demo of Tekken 3 just as much as either of them even before I finally saved up to buy the actual game.
