that's what I'm hoping..if that was the case I'd snap one up although no doubt they'd be a new model out by the time Irish carriers support this.
I can imagine this would be low on their priority list though for here at least.

No it's locked to the carrier

Nope..its not..in the US for example you'll be able to move between carriers as long as they support it.
In the UK obviously you won't be able to for the moment since EE are the only supporting carrier.

Does your watch get a new phone number?

Edit - just saw your Watch & phone provider must be the same. Probably syncs them up then somehow.

Watch is using a digital sim, so it duplicates your phone one.

Something that just dawned on me this morning re the X. Remember when the iPhone 5 came out and app developers had to redo their apps to accommodate the new screen size and resolution for the 5 and many developers took months to take action?

I guess we are going to go through that all over!

iOS is resolution independent now, so updating for the X isn't that a big a deal. Most good developers will probably have their apps ready for launch.

Looks like at least the apps which use standard apple controls will adapt automatically: https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/iphone-x/

I suspect more customised Apps might need some rework but it shouldn't be nearly as bad as the iPhone 5 launch with all apps showing black bars on each side of the display.

Here's what Apple says will automatically happen for a standard App:

Surprised Apple didn't mention this in the keynote, but the A11 chip is more powerful than the latest i7 in the macbook pro.

That's cray stuff. I'm wondering if it is just in benchmarks or also in real life performance.

If it is the later Intel should start worriying about Apple being able to design a CPU which is much smaller and energy efficient than Intel's while being more powerful. MacBooks with Apple designed ARM CPUs are on the table more than ever.

Sorry if this question has been asked times and times again but ....
If I spend $999 (€840) in America on the iPhone X, can I use it here in Ireland with my SIM card?
Or do all the new iPhones in America have built in SIM cards meaning they're uncgangeable?

It will work. All iPhones take SIM cards

They don't, I got an iPhone 4 some time back from the US and the sim was integrated and locked (no option to remove sim) and I couldn't use an Irish sim. Just curious if it's the same still.

Serious price difference with C/X & Taxes between the US & here:

US After Tax In Euro Ireland Difference Percentage difference VAT Ex-VAT
    iPhone 6 32gb $449.00 $478.19 € 400.04 € 539.00 € 138.96 34.74% € 123.97 € 415.03
    iPhone 6+ 32gb $549.00 $584.68 € 489.13 € 649.00 € 159.87 32.68% € 149.27 € 499.73
    iPhone 7 32gb $549.00 $584.68 € 489.13 € 649.00 € 159.87 32.68% € 149.27 € 499.73
    iPhone 7+ 32gb $669.00 $712.49 € 596.05 € 789.00 € 192.95 32.37% € 181.47 € 607.53
    iPhone 8 64gb $699.00 $744.43 € 622.77 € 829.00 € 206.23 33.11% € 190.67 € 638.33
    iPhone 8+ 64gb $799.00 $850.93 € 711.87 € 939.00 € 227.13 31.91% € 215.97 € 723.03

I'm in the market for a new one & leaning toward the 7+ as I don't think the extra processing power & wireless charging are worth the price difference.

Edit- yeah 120 is big difference- but still worth considering for the extra 32g space alone plus the extra year of ios updates it should get.
Possibly more battery life also and resell value?

Are those tax calculations correct as all the rates are different?

What state is it and should federal taxes not also be added?

Seems to be some kind of average maybe. Like New York comes out at $870 according to the Apple website. Plus those prices don't include a typical credit or debit card rate which would probably add 3% to the final price. My final calculation for the 8+ 64gb is more like €750. Still a lot better than €939 here tho!

I went to price an Iphone 6s in California couple years ago at a genuine Apple shop - and at the counter, after they added on all the taxes - it was working out 20 euros cheaper only than Ireland - so I didn't bother buying it there. Is the difference now really that big?

Sorry, should have said. It's Florida - 6.5% which is .5% state tax (sometimes not charged) & 6% sales tax.

Here in Michigan for an iPhone 8 64GB you’d be saving $88 tax rate is only 6% here.

There are a handful of states without sales tax where it might be worthwhile looking. Oregon and New Hampshire are probably the most accessible of these.

Just in case anyone is think the UK route - careful how you get it shipped!

Parcel Motel will replace any goods which are “stolen, lost or damaged” or will reimburse the customer €100, whichever is the least.

Yes, saw that, if that happened on Friday then some iPhones would have been gone. Thieves should have been more patient and clever.

Anyhow, I would recommend Parcel Wizard, exact same idea, giving a UK virtual address but they deliver to any address you want for no extra charge.

You can pay for higher insurance with parcel motel.

By default they cover you for €100, if you order an item that is worth more than this you pay €7 up front to extend your cover to €1000 for 14 days or €10 up front to extend it to €1500 for 14 days.

I've used it for valuable stuff quite a lot, you just need to remember to buy the extended insurance.

The Apple TV 4K doesn't support Youtube in 4K or Dolby Atmos which is a disappointment at the price of it.

I know. Mine just arrived and I'm thinking of returning it.

I had also wrongly assumed I could start a 4k download also, and let it cache, but seems 4k is stream only, download is 1080 only.

I believe Atmos support will come via an update, not sure about YouTube support

I assume YouTube depends on google updating the app?

Yes and no, it will require an update but YouTube uses a different 4K format so they’d need to update things on their end. Or Apple would need to support the YouTube format. I’d doubt either will come to an agreement anytime soon.

Is the problem that Google is refusing to stream 4K content encoded in HEVC? If yes I think they’ll have to come to it eventually, but surely it can take a while.

    They use VP9 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/VP9

It’s developed by Google but it’s royalty free so could be implemented by Apple if they wished. Maybe there’s something - privacy wise - that Apple don’t like about it.

Either way it just shows how terrible the video content world is.
