Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Group as handy as you could have realistically hoped for. The trip to Moscow not ideal but the other away trips very close.

Better not be travelling to Moscow in Round 4 or 6.

I certainly don't envy Celtic at all, Bayern & PSG, oomph.

Moscow isn't great but I don't think we can complain with that group. Should easily be top of that tbf

Three historical banana skins for us. I think we're far further along in our development now and should really be qualified with a round to spare.

Tough alright. Spurs got rode too. Still though Celtic won't win it so might as well get a few big European nights.

(Before anyone says it, I know United won't be winning it either)

Have we ever lost to any of those teams more than twice? Wouldn't uite call them banana skins.

Tough is an understatement, Europa League for them before a ball has been kicked :pac:

Not sure, both Manchester and Moscow teams are are in separate red/blue pots.

Is there any issue with playing CL games in Manchester/Moscow on consecutive nights?

I'm assuming this is the type stuff that needs to be sorted out before the actual fixtures gets released.

I don't really have very fond memories of the last few times we shared groups with Benfica and Basel but as I said that's all well in the past and all things told we should top this at a canter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Why is everyone writing off Spurs? Just for the sneer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,753 ✭✭✭✭beakerjoe

Spurs have a tough group, but if they can get the Wembley jinx off them, they are good enough to go far. I wouldnt bet against them taking points off anyone. They play suberb football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,977 ✭✭✭TheDoctor

Spurs could do Dortmund, don't things are right over there.

Fixtures should be out in the next hour or so.

That's a brilliant group. We should be topping that group easily enough if we have any attention of being considered a top tier team. Screw "boring", I'll take that group every day or the week.

Wonder who Costa will be playing for in the Chelsea -Athletico ties ??
Happy with our Group, just the one long haul to Russia.

Chelsea, surely. A.Madrid won't get any transfers this side of the matches, right :S

Edit. Or neither. Won't be Madrid though

We always seem to get CSKA! :(

Very happy with that overall though - hopefully the trip to Moscow is at a good time PL-wise though.

Do feel sorry for Celtic though - they always seem to get a very tough draw.

Was there not a year recentish when United finished behind Benfica and Basel after laughing at the ease of it originally?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,638 ✭✭✭✭bangkok

That Moscow trip is of course placed between the Spurs and Chelsea matches. The flight is about 5 hours each way, that'll be a hoor of a week for the team.

I hope they send the reserve team to moscow away

    Yes.

It could be ANY 3 other teams in the group and it could go tits up for us. On paper it is as easy a draw we could hope for and commenting on it in such terms is totally normal. Of course it may prove that United screw it up - you only have to look at our relative stuggles in the EL group last season but that fact we finished behind these two sides previously is basically irrelevant. We used to finish ahead of every side in the league quite regularly - that doesn't mean we will do it this season.

2012 I think, along with a Romanian team.

I'm not sure anyone is laughing at the ease of the group. On paper, it's one of the better draws we could have hoped for. I think the response from Lord TSC is spot on. If we've any intention of being a top tier side and doing well, we need to be topping that group with the lack of big hitters from Pot 1 & Pot 3 (with all due respect to Benfica, they are no Real Madrid). I would much rather Benfica and Basel, over Real (et al) and Napoli/Roma.

Ah I know I was mainly joking, funny coincidence though. Always like Basel though, they seem to always have a big turnover of players but come back with a good brand of football every year.

That's a great draw for United. Only negative is perhaps CSKA as the 4th seeds. Still, no excuses for not topping that group.

Read this on Reddit and found it interesting, glad we didn't draw Qarabag :D

If Man United draw Qarabag in CL, Mkhi is not allowed to travel to the away leg.
While it's just a small chance, I thought it's an interesting point. Ethnic Armenians, or those with Armenian surnames are not allowed in Azerbaijan. Additionally, anyone who has gone to the disputed region between Armenia and Azerbaijan is considerate a criminal in Az.
I recall a Europa game several years back that BVB played against an Azeri side, Mkhi didn't travel with the team, but played the home leg.

Ridiculous price. Should be 20/1 at least. No point getting carried away.

Times saying that Ibras wage has dropped from 350k a week to 125k.

I'd presume there'd be additional pay as you play bonuses too.

Yeah I was really surprised by the betting. We're 5th favourites for it.

    Real 7/2
    Barca, PSG & Bayern 7/1
    City & United 11/1
    Juve 14
    Chelsea 16
    Athletico & Liverpool 20
    Spurs 40

In fairness, bar Juve and Chelsea who else should be shorter prices than us? We've a handy group that we should by rights go through in first and then a bit of luck in the last 16 and we're away with it.

Impossible to look past Real, and if you managed to get them at anything outside 4/1 it's a great bet.
