Have I woken up in August 2017?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,181 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

Weather station reporting 100% humidity, I don't actually think I've seen that before.

12.9c too with a dense fog, exceptionally mild for this time of year.

We can only be glad the sun didn't come out - it would be a tropical heatwave!

Warm for the next 72 hours ish, a nice push of cold air coming from the north for the weekend. Wintry showers will be frequent in the north, wouldn't be surprised to see some ninja snow somewhere. No mild weather appearing anytime soon after that if we're to believe the current model output.

Love the snow pictures by the way ^^

Yep, ECM 12z is a thing of beauty - though all the other models aren't bad at all either.

The 12z EC gets the ramp out!

RTE are saying it'll be 14c at 3am. We definitely had colder nights/days than this in the "Summer" of this year

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,977 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

That is some windchill showing up in the fresh winds at the end of the week, will be some shock to the system after this mild weather atm.

The ARPEGE looks very wintry Fri evening/ night. Showing snow under those very cold uppers fri evening/ night ?????

England got to 17c today and as Dr Crayfish said, we've had cooler days/nights in the Summer than that.

Still north of 14c here in Arklow at nearly midnight

Interesting outlook from Wednesday night onwards for anyone in favoured spots!
    Outlook

Wednesday night will turn cold everywhere as temperatures fall to near freezing in the early part of the night, lowest overnight temperatures zero to plus 3 degrees, coldest in the north. The winds will become cyclonic variable in the north as an area of low pressure, called a ""polar low"", tracks over or near the north of the country. To the south of the low pressure centre winds will be strong and gusty from a southwesterly direction, later veering west. There will be showers too, likely to be heavy and falling as snow over the hills and mountains.

Thursday will be a cold day with strong westerly winds easing and becoming light variable later in the day. There'll be showers, mostly confined along western and northern coastal areas and again some will be wintry over hills and mountains. Temperatures during the afternoon will range just 4 or 5 degrees in the north to 7 or 8 degrees in the south. On Thursday night temperatures will range between minus 2 and plus 3 degrees with ice forming on untreated surfaces. There'll be showers or longer spells of rain, turning wintry with snow likely on the Wicklow Mountains.

Friday will be cold with light variable winds becoming west to northwest in direction. There'll be showers all along the west and north, turning wintry at times, but staying confined to coastal areas, elsewhere will be mostly dry with sunny spells.

Saturday will be cold with moderate west to northwest winds and wintry showers on west and north facing coasts, but mostly dry elsewhere with sunny spells.

The further outlook is for continued cold weather with showers.

all of a sudden things are starting to look very interesting, wintry showers from Wednesday night and the possibility of a band of rain turning to sleet and snow as really bitter air digs in on Friday. This end of Autumn cold spell may last at least 4 or 5 days with hints of another possible more severe cold winter blast to follow during the first few days of December, fingers and toes crossed for that one.

Joanna Donnelly just mentioned a polar low for the north Wednesday night, though there's no sign of one on any of the hi-res models.

Yeah, the forecast on met.ie also mentions snow, and calls out the Wicklow Mountains on Thursday night as likely for snow. Doubt it'd be at my level though (200m asl).

I would be making plans to drive to above 300 meters for your first taste of snow this winter
Please park below the snow level (where it is not settling or it is raining) and use a hired quad bike or something to go to the snow
Don’t get your car stuck up there
    Be kitted out

Interesting system passing over us on Friday night with a lot of precipitation and potential for snow on its norther edge, Wicklow mountains could see full on blizzard conditions with a slight shift northwards. It's a very messy picture this week though so a chance this low will totally disappear from later runs, it doesn't even show up on the euro model

Quad bike?! Its the first lick of winter in Ireland, not January in Val d'Isere, hike it with some waterproof boots!

Looks like the UK have received their first snow warning of the season.
    Between 03:00 Thu 23rd and 13:00 Thu 23rd

An area of snow is expected to affect parts of Scotland on Thursday morning. Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

GFS looks very windy if not stormy on Thurs , not as strong yet still in yellow warning category on the other models.

All agree very wet tomorrow, possible warnings to come I'd imagine. Possibly quite windy in the SE and on E coasts for a time.

Looks like the low that was earlier shown to cross the country on fri by the ARPEGE will now slide pass off / along the S coast , may clip the SE.

Looks like a very vigerous low forming off the SE on Sat deepening over the UK , we look to miss that one atm.

Certainly a spell of inclement weather in store .

Strange for Met E to have mentioned a polar low, will be one to keep an eye out for on the satellite maps.

Sure is, and the tabloids and amateur forecasters have jumped on it!

I’m sure the journal and independent are all over this.

I’m sure the journal and independent are all over this.

Journal's 1 article about it seems calm and reasonable:
    http://www.thejournal.ie/snow-expected-weather-3707933-Nov2017/

Indo's also seems reasonable too (I'd normally quibble over 'temperatures set to plunge', but honestly that is a fair enough description of the range we'll see from today to the end of the week):

Met É have it referenced as a ""polar low"", almost as if its a so-called sarky term!!

ECM 12z ensembles are showing it warm for the US and cold for Europe.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,977 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Wet day in store tomorrow and quite windy along S and SE coasts . A lot of rain to fall from the early hours until late tomorrow . Rain just making it to the SW coast now. The land is very soggy so spot flooding a threat no doubt. The drop off in temps is spectacular tomorrow as the new cold air mass takes over.

Quite looking forward to this in a strange way - we have a toddler with his first cold, so we have to lock the doors and stay inside anyway, may as well have some interesting weather outside while we're in!
