Kindle App for Mac functionality

I've downloaded the Kindle app for Mac, and am wondering how to get books/ docs I have stored in my Kindle cloud library, but not purchased from Amazon, onto my Mac for reading? All my purchased content is showing fine, and all my apps on other platorms (ios, Android) are showing my other content (mostly academic papers in PDF format) but I really could do with having everything in one place and synced across all my devices- mostly because I want to use the notebook functionality in Kindle to store annotations etc in the Kindle app if possible.

It's not a dealbreaker but surely there's a way to get not purchased content on my Mac app?
