Hi just wondering if the 'Statistics and Data Analytics' structured elective would be a good choice? How difficult is it? Would it look good to a potential employer or would they even care?

The difficulty depends on which modules you take to qualify for the recognition. How do you currently stand with statistics? What course are you taking?

I'm not sure how much difference it would make to employers, but I don't think it's a poor way to spend some of your elective options.

It will show on your transcript as a specialisation which I think will be attractive to an employer. It will show you have a deepened knowledge on a particular subject. I think there's about 17 on offer this year - worth checking them out on the current students website.

I can't speak for employers, but I've done the structured elective in statistics. If you're strong with mathematics, and have a good basis in statistics, the modules are very easy. Research Methods and Practical Statistics are only a touch beyond what you've already done in the Leaving Certificate. Data Modelling also covers a lot of the Leaving Certificate course, but goes a bit beyond by touching upon inferential statistics and estimators. If you've a strong mathematical basis, an A in all of the modules is extremely feasible. If you aren't strong in maths or stats they may be more challenging and require a bit more time, but I would strongly recommend them as very manageable electives.

The only thing to keep in mind is that Practical Stats is based largely online. The toughest part of the module, therefore, is time management. You need to be very astute in keeping to a work schedule and completing the necessary tasks. In addition, the coding will be a bit novel since you presumably will not have done any before, but it's taught very well and isn't very advanced. It will serve very well if you're doing later statistics modules though.

EDIT: Also, keep in mind these modules can be very in demand as electives due to their relative lack of difficulty and for the structured elective. It's very important you register for them early if you want to get a spot.
