Failed summer exams what now

My son who is high functioning autistic failed his first year by 10 credits (5 in each of two modules).
We are trying to figure out what happens now. Is there any hope of him being able to continue into second year and retake these exams next year. Or does he have to repeat first year? He was on the susi grant, would this cover his repeat becasue we can't afford it if it doesn't.
Who do we contact to try and sort this out, the UCC website is not very helpful.

Please if anyone has any advice it would be very gratefully received.

Phone the college. Sorry I've no answer but I'm guessing they would be able to let you have a definite answer.
Hopefully things will work out in your sons favour.

Might be worth getting on to the welfare or education officer in the SU, they'll have all the information to hand.

Thank you both, we will try that.

Most likely will have to repeat the two modules but only those two , its not uncommon so no shame in it and its not that expensive unless he has to resit labs etc

Not sure if it has changed but in my time you would have an opportunity to repeat the exams in August and proceed to second year if you got a sufficient mark there to pass the year.

SUSI doesn't normally cover a repeat year, but having said that, the cost of repeating 10 credits won't be too high.

Here's the link to the repeat fees: https://www.ucc.ie/en/media/support/financeoffice/fees/2017_2018-Ready-Reckoner.pdf Eg 10 credits in Arts is €1,113 and 10 credits in Science is €1,385 for the year.

Thank you SouthernBelle for this information. He was on the maintenance grant from Susi as well as we don't live in Cork. It is the loss of this that will be hitting us hard too if he is not eligible for it anymore.
It is such a pity for him as he is really into the course and worked extremely hard throughout the year but he has panic attacks along with his autism he finds exams extremely difficult to take so they drag him down even when he knows the material inside out.

He should have a course coordinator and possibly a mentor as well. Contact them and see what the options are. He may be able to repeat exams only, which would drop the cost and could remove the accommodation cost.

He should probably register with the Disability Office in UCC, if he hasn't already done so. They'll give him extra help / advice.

Also, it might be worth applying to SUSI under "exceptional circumstances".
