The effects of the Wicklow rain shadow can clearly be seen in yesterday's reports. 18mm at Dublin Airport, only 6mm at Casement and 9mm at the Phoenix Park.
Almost all of the total at the airport fell in a very short period in the morning giving the customary chaos on the roads.

Grange's September 2017 summary

Wet with near average temperatures but sunny.

Rainfall: Wettest September since 2012 but not remarkable.
I recorded a rainfall total of 78.2mm during September 2017 which comes to 156% of my average September rainfall. This would make it the wettest September since 2012 (which recorded 97.3mm) but nothing remarkable in comparison with the wettest Septembers I've recorded. My wettest day was the 3rd with 14.2mm with a close match of 14.1mm on the 27th. September 2015 & 2016 had wetter days however. I recorded 21 wet days (days with 0.1mm or more) during September which made it my highest number of wet days for September since 1993 and the third most on record. This meant there was only 9 dry days (days with 0mm) compared to the average of 14-16 dry days.

Temperature: Near average temperatures, not as warm as 2016 and not as cold as 2015.
I recorded a mean temperature of 12.4c during September 2017 which comes to +0.2c above my September mean temperature. The month was not as warm as September 2016 (or 2014) but also not as cold as September 2015. Unlike September 2016 which broke many temperature records, September 2017 was far more unremarkable and benign. My maximum temperature for the month was 20.4c on the 19th - in comparison with 26.9c on September 5th 2016. This was not a record breakingly low maximum for September either as 2015 had a maximum of only 20.1c on the 8th and some Septembers such as 2008 failed to even reach 20c. My minimum temperature for the month was 4.4c on the 18th - although September 2016 recorded a higher minimum. Maximum temperatures were somewhat below par for September 2017 but the minimums kept the monthly mean on the positive side of average with many nights recording minimums of more than 8c when I should be at 5-7c on a typical September night.

Sunshine: Sunnier than average but not as sunny as 2015.
I recorded a sunshine total of 143 hours which comes to 116% of my average September sunshine. September 2017 was just 1 hour short of 2016's total of 144 hours but not as sunny as September 2015 which recorded a record breaking total of 165 hours - my sunniest September on record. Much of September had sunny spells in between periods of rain or showers. Therefore, daily sunshine totals were quite low. My highest daily sunshine was only 10.8 hours on the 25th and is there with some of my lowest maximum September daily sunshine totals on record though not as low as 2016 or 2008. This was the only very sunny day of the month (days with 10 hours or more). I recorded 1 completely dull day (days with 0 hours), which is somewhat below average. Whilst it was nice that it was sunny, not that memorable of a month for sunshine.
