Letter of authority

Hi there, my wife's father was forced to move into a nursing home recently and they are trying to get his financial affairs in order. Power of attorney has been invoked but the courts are not open until October so they are stuck in limbo to a certain extent.

They were adviced by a dementia support group that if they got their dad to sign a letter of authority, that they would be able to start taking actions involving his bank account (cancel a lost atm card, view statements to see all current direct debits being paid out, cancel direct debit for utility bills, set up direct debit to pay nursing home etc).

Is this information accurate? And if so, what steps would be involved exactly?

    Thanks a million,

    Shane

    Hi Shane,

Thanks for getting in contact with and very sorry to hear of this situation.

The advise that you have received is not correct. We would need the official Power of Attorney documentation to give any access to your father in laws account to anyone but him. If there is a card missing you can call us on 0818 365 365 and cancel the card but no information or other actions could be preformed on the account. Could I ask if your father in law would be in a condition to either call or go into a branch himself?

    Thanks again,
    Darren.

    Hi Darren,

Thanks for the reply. No, he has just been released from a long spell in a high dependency unit in hospital and was only discharged on the condition that he went straight into long term care. Physically and cognitively he would struggle to be coherent over the phone and going to a branch would be out of the question. Good to know cards can be cancelled at least,

    Thanks again,

    Shane
