Looks on a direct path to Key West .To me it seems it will go more west and not hit Florida directly.

Every single expert seems to say it will hit Florida directly.

So is the eye of these the most powerful winds, or just outside of the eye?

Just from watching one of the channels - generally winds just north of the eye seem to be the strongest.

However, Irma is just so huge so it's irrelevant really.

They like to predict that though. Better to be safe than sorry.
I'm just wondering how it will change path so wildly to hit Florida directly. It seems to be tracking west every day, Key West could be the direct hit, and then westward of Florida

Usually to the north-east of the eye is the worst for Atlantic hurricanes heading and rotating in the direction of Irma (it's dependent on rotation direction and movement direction).

Just looking at the 1st satellite picture in Post 455, and Jose coming in behind, is there anything to say it won't gather momentum and become as big as Irma?

Can they tell it will be smaller? Or can that change?

Don't remember that making the news, I assume it did no damage?

Think it more or less formed in the gulf of Mexico and not over the Atlantic.

    Jose upgraded to Cat 4.

It's yet to make landfall in Mexico, its Cat 2 atm, but may be upgraded to Cat 3, which would make it a major Hurricane and would be the first time we have ever had 3 Major Atlantic Hurricanes at one time.

So is there an even chance it might be a Cat 5 by the time it gets to the location where Irma is now?

Or could it just as likely go back to a Cat3 or 2?

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,589 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

What strikes me since I have been following these the last few days, is how slow they move.

Jose takes a turn north into the Atlantic after it hits the northern leeward Islands, it may make Cat 5, the last recon flight recorded sustained winds at Cat 5 level.

If you look back at some of the predicted tracks already posted on this thread, Jose will probably not end up taking the same path as Irma.

Have to say, this stuff is fascinating (and scary at the same time).

I hate stormy nights up here in NW Donegal, and we have had some scary nights, but the images from these bring it all into perspective.

It probably won't get as big as Irma, because it's following in Irma's wake (Irma stirred up the sea so colder water would be mixed to the surface), and it's not forecast to get into the warmer waters that Irma is in currently.

In saying that, surprisingly Jose is already a very powerful cat4 hurricane and could easily reach cat5 so who knows how big/powerful it will get. The one thing that's almost certain is it won't follow the same track as Irma so the bigger islands and the US are fairly safe from it's effects. The smaller Leeward Islands could get another serious battering though. Once it turns north it will weaken in the cooler waters.

No major hurricanes to hit the US in 12yrs, now there's a rake of them. Looks like they are man made, been used as practice for their marshal law plans in America when they pull the plug on the debt based US dollar.

What time is Irma supposed to make landfall in Florida?

    It's slowing down, 19km/h 12mph West (280). 555km/h from Miami. 925mb.
NHC discussion has hurricane Irma increasing just enough to become a Category five again, at 36 hours.

Sunday morning should be when the strongest winds move ashore. The outer bands will be affecting the coast in the next 12 hours or so.

Miami beach although deserted, seems woefully unprepared for a potential hurricane.
Nothing boarded up, windows fully exposed.
Hermes and Jimmy Choos, awnings still open, seriously?
