Miami beach although deserted, seems woefully unprepared for a potential hurricane.
Nothing boarded up, windows fully exposed.
Hermes and Jimmy Choos, awnings still open, seriously?
Very true if you look on earth cams you will still see people walking about and some still on the beach they don't look in any great panic to be leaving...

They look like they have no idea what's about to occur

Evacuating doesn't necessarily mean moving completely out of the hurricanes path. There are storm shelters around the area that are appropriately reinforced, far enough from the sea, above flood zones etc.
The people you see may be evacuating to one of those or have a suitable place in their own dwelling.

They still have 24 hours before the storm starts, might as well enjoy the calm.

Two different friends of mine in Clearwater are boarding up their properties and one has already gone inland and the other will be travelling north tomorrow morning.

So is the eye of these the most powerful winds, or just outside of the eye?

AFAIR, inside the eye is completely still and calm but the area around the eye has the strongest winds. So the strongest winds are located around the eye but not in the eye itself.

I presume insurance won't cover for property loss so does the federal state step in to reinstate people for their losses?

Latest recon data from Mission 23 currently in the storm.

140-knot flight-level, peak SFMR surface winds 125 knots in NW eyewall. Slight weakening.

I would guess those photos of fancy shop fronts aren't in their final state just yet.

Why would any sensible shop owner just leave their shops like that.

I'm guessing if you took a photo in the next 24hrs they will all be boarded up, awnings down etc.

its some rogue of a hurricane, is that unusual to weaken and strengthen again?

No, it's perfectly normal. The eye wall periodically recycles and during this process the storm can weaken slightly before regaining or even exceeding previous strength.

Other factors full moon was 6th September so tides will be higher and it may pass over lake Okeechobee which may lead substantial water displacement over it's banks.

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

Can someone explain why Irma will change path and head towards Florida. The path its on takes it into the Gulf Of Mekkico

Also the video doesn't really mention this, but even though hurricanes seem to be these huge, scary beasts of weather systems, they're really easily affected by other much weaker storms.

This is because they're so symmetrical 'horizontally' in terms of temperature that even minor storms nearby can really change their paths.

This is also why some hurricanes will appear to just stall and stop moving (like Harvey), because if left to their own devices, they don't have the temperature gradients that cause motion, so they wouldn't move.

Thanks for the video, helped explain it mostly.

But why are so many of these internet guys absolute pains in the ass? Everything has to be a comedy show, and few of them are funny.

So toby is right, an explosion or a controlled chemical reaction could be used to alter or weaken the hurricane theoretically

It would probably need to be huge, even weather systems contain a hell of a lot more energy than most weapons, iirc.

Relations in Fort Myers have been evacuated to a shelter. Previously thought they could wait it out at home. Had all boarded up and ready. But I think Irma shifting west has changed that.

Are we likely to see destruction on the same level as the Caribbean or would building reg. be more stricked in Florida? As well as the winds I assume flooding would be a big problem for Florida given how flat it is. It's more or less a swamp to begin with.
