Most of Naples Florida where the eye is due next is but 4 or 5 feet above sea level with a predicted surge of 11 to 15 feet
Naples is a city area the size of Cork about 2hrs drive south of Tampa

The eye still hasn't made landfall. That's expected in the next 2 or 3 hours and that's where the strongest winds are

The eye has already been and gone right through the Keys.

Gusts north of Miami 109mph which is a long way from eye wall so I really doubt it's a CAT 1

Gusts are frequently well above the sustained readings, even the strongest gust recorded so far was only a cat 3.

Storm surge will still be a major danger but the eye hasn't recovered its structure since leaving Cuba so hopefully the worst of the winds have passed

It's a Cat 4 but probably about to drop to Cat 3 or 2 by end of day. It's no Cat 1 that's for certain

The before and after photos from Marco island and Naples/Tampa should be interesting. Really scenic areas , pristine.

Looking at the Florida radar there appears to be considerable degradation in the SW quadrant of the system. Quite a number of clear patches, even quite close in to the eye. Might lessen the wind, surge threat etc behind the eye as it moves north.

I know they're speaking Spanish and all...but this isn't Cuba...it's Marathon Key, right in the middle of the Florida Keys where the eye of Irma hit

Aye,Naples is a lovely area of Florida, lots of beachside hotels
Here's how near we were to the beach in the room we stayed in last time I was there
That room is definitely going under water in a few hours

What is it with people abandoning their cars at intersections over there. On several different reports there are cars left in the middle of the road even though there's only about 4 inches of water around them. Just drive the car away from the flood folks.

Tornado at Fort Lauderdale airport right now, according to CNN

    From the NHC now:

...URGENT...WATER LEVELS FROM STORM SURGE TO RISE RAPIDLY IN THE NAPLES AND MARCO ISLAND AREA...

With the passage of the eye of Irma during the next couple of hours, the wind direction will shift to onshore, causing water levels along the southwest coast of Florida to rapidly rise in a matter of minutes.

MOVE AWAY FROM THE WATER! Life-threatening storm surge inundation of 10 to 15 feet above ground level is expected in this area.

Thinking the same, madness to have people out in that.

Been watching the coverage on CNN this evening. Feel so sorry for the presenters out in that awful weather, one guy near the water in Miami and he's struggling to stay standing.I'm shouting at the tv for him to get in out of it. FFS no job is worth that risk to life!

I'm just waiting for him to get blown into the water, not very safe considering their advising people to stay away from the shore lines
