Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Should Matt Cooper be removed from the last word?

I think it makes absolutely no sense for communicorp having two middle-aged men going head to head with a current affairs talk show and then you have Cooper doing cringe things like the 5 @ 5 trying to sound younger. I think the last word needs an new younger presenter, I suggest Abie Philbin Bowman.

The Last Word isn't aimed at "younger" listeners - you can switch over to 2fm and listen to that bellend McDermott and his inane prattle if that's what you want.

    Hi Abie.
I think Cooper is great. I say keep him.

I think you need to try a different station. I suggest 2FM.

The last word with Matt is the only reason I tune in todayfm anymore. Once Anton left, I personally left todayfm with the exception of the last word. If Matt leaves I doubt I'll ever tune back in. I think his show is excellent and generally he is very fair discussing every topic.

Matt Cooper is one of the top presenters on radio and I'd hate to see him go from drivetime. Numerous other channels that need to change up that timeslot and today fm is not one IMO

The bowman suggestion is bizarre. Cooper is at the top of his game really and should be left there

OP wants one of the best presenters of his type taken off the show because of his age?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,148 ✭✭✭Passenger

The content of his show is a tad more eclectic than the other drive time shows imho so for that reason alone he's always worth tuning in to.

Eamonn Dunphy, is that you? :p

Matt Copper is great, the online minus point I'd have for him is that sometimes he has people on that he's a fan of, and tends to fawn over them a bit. Otherwise he's top notch.

Then what's the deal with the 5@ 5 and playing clips from the al porter show?

5 @ 5 is a tiny humourous feature. Its not an hour long piece.

When has he played Al Porter?

Absolutely nothing to do with age, Dunphy appealed to younger listeners when he was presenting the show, Cooper just sounds ridiculous amongst Fergal Darcy, Al Porter, D&D etc... he should be up stairs on Newstalk amongst Pat Kenny, Ivan Yates etc

Yeah but Matt out the door is an attractive option.

Pretty much stopped listening to it now - current affairs has dumbed down massively over the last 10 years (not just the last word to be fair). It's hard not to be cynical that they're pretty much kept going by text income, so it's all about the most controversial commentators (like that O'Leary wannabe doctor), and stories that will generate most noise rather than genuine content.

btw Communicorp's long time game has to be merge TodayFM and Newstalk, and shift the talk content onto one station.

Whatever about middle-aged men presenting radio programming, I am getting seriously fed up with this notion that you have to fire radio and television presenters when they hit their middle 40s.

It takes a long time to build up the experience, confidence/hard neck and contacts network to present that kind of radio.

I’d rather listen to someone who is able to conduct a hard-hitting interview than listen to someone because of their age. I don’t even know or care what age the presenters are that I’m listening to, I just want to hear good radio.

I mean Vincent Browne was no spring chicken, but he was FAR more watchable than some young fella / young one timidly making their way through their first few years on air.

Also, think about it: Why would anyone get involved in radio presentation at all if the expectation is that you toddle off to an old folks home when you hit 40.
It’s absolute nonsense and it’s also probably illegal under the Equal Status act on age discrimination grounds.

People are entitled to work out their career.

His constant quibbling on his twitter account about the golden haired one is beginning to turn me against him. Yeah Trump is a nut job, we get it Matt.
Best presenter on radio outside of that.

be careful what you wish for considering what newstalk presented us with the last year.

that said i honestly couldnt tell you the last time i listened to the show for any real length of time.

listened religiously when dunphy was hosting it, in fact took out an SSIA on the back of his raging about it but how you'd be mad not to take it up considering the gov was throwing away our tax money.

come to think of it thank to them fuking around their various hosts over the years pretty much the only show i still listen to on todayfm is the sunday business show.

i cant help thinking like others have mooted the stations being gradually moved into a totally different direction. it probably is only a matter of time till all the talking heads there are switched to the newstalk brand.

Maybe TodayFM would consider a whole new show, Matt Cooper and Paul Williams perfect match in the safety of somewhere safe where they wouldn't be found, maybe Ciara Kelly could join too.

Isn't that more of a thing though in relation to "young people" shows? I kinda get why in those situations. To be fair, for current affairs - and entertainment - there are plenty of people presenting at an age well beyond the 40s. Hopefully people like Rick O'Shea will get a gig elsewhere.

It doesn't make sense for a 45-year-old to be presenting a teenybopper show, and I'm not sure a lot of them would want to do that anyway. I guess they knew it when they entered the business.

Not give up a licence - Today FM all music, Newstalk for the talk content.

Makes no sense, bar for licence requirements, for them to put the last word up against drivetime, The very last word up against whatever newstalk have on a saturday morning, Sunday mornings they're pretty much mirror images, Off the Ball on all day Saturday, with live English football up against it on Today Fm...

But......unless things have changed dramatically* part of their license T's & C's is their content must be X% of news/current affairs, X% sport etc. Today FM can't be 100% music, hence why The Last Word was created in the first place.

I listened in for the first time since March today. Nothing much has changed:

    Pat Hickey
    Care to share
    Brian Kennedys arse cancer
    Cal and Marion
Trump is still the devil incarnate
    Mats poor sports analysis
His down with the kids music slot

That said I enjoyed the interview with the fraudster so I'll stick with it for a few days.

    Hi Abie.
I think Cooper is great. I say keep him.

I thought those "Hi <presenter>" threads were banned on this forum?

Matt Coopers show would be great if it wasn't for his voice, and Tony Cascarino.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,168 ✭✭✭Ursus Horribilis

Removing Matt Cooper implies that he's doing something wrong. From what I can see, the main objections seem to be that the 5 at 5 is ridiculous, he pronounces Saturday as Saharday, he's 51, he doesn't like Donald Trump and some of the regular guests aren't to people's taste. 130,000 people listen to him consistently, which is more than many of the other shows on Today FM. If people didn't like his show they'd be tuning into Drivetime or Newstalk instead. Clearly there is an audience for him and that show. There are other shows on Today FM that need looking at, not their current affairs program which is hosted by a credible journalist/broadcaster.

If this was the counting of votes for an election, you would say he is set, based on current trends, to win by a landslide! The "Silent Majority" are voting for him to remain. No, eh, M-Exit for Matt then!

The only situation where it would make sense (imo) to move him would be if he was taking over the drivetime slot on Newstalk. Then, yes, he could be replaced by a more music-driven show on Today FM. With Ivan Yates in that slot on Newstalk, that won't be necessary for the time being.
