I've a few bike pumps but none of them are satisfactory. The valve I have is similar to a car valve but I find it hard to keep the pump attached when the pressure gets high. Any suggestions for a decent one that doesn't cost the earth.

has a little step you can stand on to get more air in.

you'd need to check the connections you have as these are a mix of Presta and schraeder

I bought a Tesco bike foot pump with gauge(dual valve type) for under 5 euro and it works ok in my case (80 psi hybrid 35 mm tyres) .
Dealz do a small plastic pump for 1.49. that directly attaches to valve (no hose and no gauge) The nozzles can be reversed for either type of valve. I have bought two and these seem to work OK up to about 50 psi and its a struggle to get higher pressure. But they are very light and can clip to frame (use extra cable ties) and I think are OK as emergency pumps.

Got a foot pump in Lidl but a bit disappointed with it. Keeps blowing out of the valve when the pressure comes on. Two man job as you need someone to hold it on....

It's not a foot pump you want it's a track pump

The nozzle should have a little handle on it which grabs the valve on the tube.

Foot pumps are generally for pressures of about 40 or 50psi max. (often lower than 40psi) as they are generally for cars. They really can't handle much more and are built not too. A track pump will stay on until upto 140 or 160psi if in good condition which is way above what you will need.
