And given the awesome looking Legacy pack, how many sales were lost to people holding off on the off chance it comes pack into stock?

Legacy pack would appeal to a minority demographic anyway.
They've already announced prime 4, they can't back out!

They could very easily. The 3DS was chosen as a much less expensive litmus test. If there's no appetite for the franchise why spend millions developing it for switch?

Mercurysteam, at least, deserve to make another 2d metroid.

    *raises hand*

But yeah, Metroid was never a huge seller in Japan and UK aren't big mobile gamers. Or Nintendo gamers. As far as I know. Then there are the ones who only want it on Switch.

Why is the general public so ignorant to this franchise's greatness? America. Let's see how it fares there.

It's weird people are so happy to see certain games announced that they don't end up buying. It's like when they see the trailer they already won.
It's not a Nintendo only thing but I think stuff like DOOM for Switch may not sell much when they get released as the general public will have a reason not to buy it.
Maybe its full price or they're busy playing Mario or Xenoblade.

I think it's one of those situations, if Metroid sells low, that sometimes no one is to blame really. Nintendo have put a really good Metroid game out after many years without one, low sales would maybe justify Nintendo's years without a Metroid title and good sales would show desire to keep releasing titles in the franchise. I do think it's a little harder to gauge because it's a 3DS title, it's probably nearing the end of it's cycle or at least a cycle where releases are often. Even though console versions never sold huge they did ok and the work Retro did really revitalised the series in what was always a risky move to 3D. Hopefully it ends up doing well and that interest in the series is logged for those who makes the decisions.

howlongtobeat (never the most accurate metric, granted) currently has it at around 9 and a half hours to clear it, would that be accurate in everyone's experience? If so I'm kinda heartened to see it ain't as compact as the last couple 2D Metroids.

It definitely isn't as compact as the other metroids. Areas are much bigger.

Took me 16 hours+ to beat with over 80% of items collected. Final boss battle was just brilliant. It's such a spectacle in 3d too but if you're like me and jerk the 3DS when there's intense movement and timing required it's probably best to turn it off again. Cut scenes in 3d for that fight are just cool so make sure to switch the 3d back on for those. Throughout the whole game actually Samus comes across as an amazing character and quite the badass too.

Was really taken aback by the 100% "reward". Gave me the chills. Made a lot of sense too but I just really hadn't thought about things that way.

Spoiler unrelated to the above but kind of relevant if you've not yet played Super Metroid or don't know the story. Anyone who knows the story of Super will find this safe.
That little larvae is really cute. I kind of want to keep him now. They really make you like it too by the animation and the behaviour.
    Really nice stuff.

Cheers for that, sounds like a treat. Appreciate that they might be undoing some the damage done to Samus' character in Other M. Granted, Other M is so maligned for its story (whereas the gameplay didn't really pick up the slack enough) as to be almost collectively considered non-canon, but good to see they're covering their bases.

I'm a metroid fan but I don't think I'll be getting this one. I'd rather get the snes mini and play through Super again.

I find the aesthetic here to be awful. Something about the way 3d objects look on the 3DS really annoys me. It's so low res and ugly.

Super metroid is a prettier game. That shouldn't be the case with what we can pull off today.

I look at other 2d metroidvania's like Ori and then I look at samus returns......and it's night and day. I'm not saying I think Unity would run on the 3ds.....but why not go simple? Go back to sprites. It's simply better looking.

While I agree for the most part that sprites look better, I was pleasantly surprised by the graphics in Samus Returns. From screenshots and videos online, I did not like the games art style at all. However, in game, with the 3d slider up about half way, it looks a lot better to me. I still prefer Super Metroid or Zero Missions style, but Samus Returns is a nice looking game in its own way.

  • Very hard to pass judgement on something you haven't even played.
I will wait till I pick it up. From reading here the 3D feature coupled with the layout is one of the best implementations of it.

Screenshots don't do it justice, the 3D is superb. Gameplay wise... Not sure the extensive bug-hunt is as much fun as having discrete bosses. Also, would like to be able to mark my map (that function might be there and I just haven't found it yet)

There's a map marker system alright, you can drop coloured pins in rooms on the map.

I'm not passing judgement on how good the game is....I'm passing judgement on how fugly it is.

I have a 3DS with plenty of games. I've played it plenty. Show a screenshot of anything rendered in 3d or 5 seconds of video of any game on the 3ds and its instantly recognizable.

It's simply not capable of pulling off the graphics style chosen. I'm not talking about the 3D effect with the slider.....I'm talking about the textures being rendered. Non 2d games on the 3ds are ugly. It's as simple as that. There is a ton of aliasing, it's ultra low resolution and visually its a muddy mess. This game is no different.

When you have limited power to work with, stick to 2D.....or atleast simple 3d objects. Compare New super mario bros to the Mario Land 3D. The older game is visually much better.

The same applies here. Super metroid and Fusion and Zero mission are pretty games. This is not.

Well, that's an opinion I'll grant you, and stationary images of the more ambitious 3DS games don't look great.
But see them in motion and it's a whole different ball game.
The two Kirby titles on the 3DS are my favourites and look simply stunning, despite embracing the 3D effects on offer, multilayered levels and so on.
Luigi's Mansion screenshots look appallingly low res, but in motion the game is fantastic.
NSMB2 on the 3DS, aside from some effects, looks like it could run on a DS, but Super Mario Land 3D is superb tbh and looks great, in motion certainly, it's hard to impart the impressiveness of the game in freeze frame.

I haven't played Metroid: Samus Return, so I can't judge the gameplay, but the game in motion looks amazing.
Perhaps, just perhaps, it would have been better served on the Switch, and still may yet be, with higher resolution assets, but the innate gameplay isn't going to change.

There's a moment in samus returns when you're deep into the Caverns of SR388 that you come across a crystalline structure that climbs out of your 3DS - and it is just gorgeous.

I wasn't expecting much graphically from this game and ended up being very pleasantly surprised. The 3d is actually rather well implemented in this game.

  • Played the first hour of this.
Contrary to the believe that this is a bad looking game.....
No, no it's most defiantly not.

3D implementation is the best I've seen on the 3DS. Sound quality is excellent too. And the level design is gorgeous. The backdrops really make it.

I thought the deflect mechanic would be gimmicky but it's actually not. Loving the first hour so far.

They really do, there's a lot of subtle stuff going on there. I particularly like how some of the Metroids come out of the background.

Graphics are spot on and really help the experience; it's a nice to have a break from "my 4K is better than your 4K" and just use the little things to create the immersion.

    Anyway, 17 Metroids left.

Yeah, they really did a stellar job on the graphics in the game. So many little incidental background things, and animations that really sell the environments, and make a fantastic cohesive world. Really enjoying the game so far! Haven't been keeping track of how many metroids I've got/have to go, just the number that gets me through to the next area, and really enjoying it so far. Just got a couple of power-ups in quick succession too, which was nice!

  • I've only got to play a little over 2 hours :(

Hopefully I get a good run at it this weekend.

How many hours have you pumped into it so far Wilfinity?

I think I'm at 6 or 7 hours. But I'm not exactly bursting my balls to get through it. Haven't revisited any earlier sections yet either (to see if I can access areas I couldn't before).

Just finished. Overall thought it was great. I'd agree with the earlier comments that it is surprisingly good looking, and the 3D effect really well utilised, one boss battle in particular.

My one complaint was lack of variety in bosses to a degree, it felt like there was a lot of repetition compared to other games in the series. This was particularly highlighted when they did change things up on a few occasions, with the result being some of the highlights of the entire game, the last battle in particular.

It took me 13 and a half hours to beat with 86% completion. It's a really well done remake considering the original is probably the weakest of the series. Would easily recommend to anyone, especially fans of the series or genre.

Just finished. Wasn't rushing through by any means, but wanted to finish with 100%. Did that, but was disappointed that it doesn't show percentage completion on the end screen! 20:22 in total, spent quite a while searching for the last item, which was kinda hidden in plain sight!
