Nah the notch has nothing to do with it. It's thinner than the plus screen, that's why it's smaller. 5.8 and 5.5 are diagonally measured, so sure if you measure the X screen diagonally you'll get 5.8 but that's because it's taller than then plus. It's thinner as well. Slightly wider than the regular 8 screen.

Really think you're just making excuses for Apple. They don't get everything right.

If promoted as 0.3 inch larger than the plus then one would not expect the actual video display size to be actually smaller than the plus.

It also just looks ugly to me as well.

You can't make excuses for physics mate. It's not bigger than the plus. That's known. It's not smaller because of the notch. That's known. It's smaller because of the horizontal dimensions.

To get fast charging to work with qi do you need a special wall plug and cable?

Either way there is no way i'd have the dated lcd panel over the X's screen there absolutely is noooo comparison even with the notch.

29W (or higher) power adapter and USB C to lightning cable - https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT208137

    https://www.apple.com/ie/shop/product/MJ262B/A/29w-usb‑c-power-adapter?fnode=97

    https://www.apple.com/ie/shop/product/MK0X2ZM/A/usb-c-to-lightning-cable-1-m?fnode=97

Also if you have 12W power adapter and regular lightning cable it will obviously fast charge the phone as well in comparison to the 5W adapter in the box

    https://www.apple.com/ie/shop/product/MD836B/B/apple-12w-usb-power-adapter?fnode=97

This article shows a nice graph of what to potentially expect from different adapters: https://9to5mac.com/2017/10/02/whats-the-best-fast-charger-for-iphone-8-and-iphone-x/

Of course there is a comparison. The 8 plus has a very good LCD panel.

Just because OLED is out no does not mean that the LCD was poor.

I still prefer the dimensions of the plus screen.

Thanks. But what I’m looking for is the Qi wire free charging. To get the Qi pad to do fast charge do I need a specific wall plug and cable too?

I’m looking at this Qi pad

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01H7547AE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    And this wall plug

I presume there will be an iPhone X plus at some stage. That’s the one to go for?

Isn’t there an update coming for that. I’m sure wireless charging is limited to 5w out of the box.

I would doubt it. It's nearly the same screen size as an 8 Plus but with the smaller physical size in between the 8 and 8 Plus. Wouldn't make sense to me...

Yeah Apple have to release a software update for 7.5w to be possible.

Why not. I’d youre a fan of giant screens the X is a step backwards from the plus. It looks as if they’ve completely worn out the old form factor and the easiest way to generate buzz and sales would be an x plus.

Probably next year. Which one to go for will depend on size preference (and to some extend on budget). Personally I have no interest in larger phones as the 6 form factor already barely fits in some of my trousers pockets and this is where I like to carry my phone.

X is the sweet spot! Big screen, smaller physical size...

Sure they could make a phone the size of the 8 Plus with edge to edge screen... I don't see it happening with the X.

They have clearly split the offering into multiple channels. 8 and 8 Plus will continue in the current form most likely with the 9 and 9 Plus, whereas the X will be the flagship where the latest and greatest technology and gimmicks will be introduced... I don't think they will offer multiple version of the X or whatever it will be called in the next version.

Correct. You’ll need one that supports 7.5W charging and wait for the update to support it.

2 days? It will most likely be overnight shipping from a warehouse in the UK to Ireland. Expect shipping email on Thursday.

I might agree if the 8 sales weren’t poor. It’s diminsihing returns on that design. I’d say an x plus is inevitable.

Just ordered cases, tempered glass protector and a cheap 5W wireless charger.. couldn’t help myself, even though my estimated delivery is 15th-22nd! Will get a Belkin 7.5W wireless charger if I end up using the wireless charging a lot.

The pending charge on my card has changed to an actual transaction now. Hopefully that means it’s about to ship.

No change on the Apple site though.

That was always going to be the case when you launch 2 different phones at the same time. People are always going to wait or go with the better option. If there was no X, the 8 sales would have been very similar to the 7.

The iPhone 8/+ is a very good phone in its own right, but comparing it to X, if you had the money, you'd wait. That's natural. I don't think that makes the 8 a bad phone.

It's clear that they are creating different price point streams. The $100 increase or so from 6 up to 8 will appeal to various audiences. I don't think the 8 and X are even meant to compete. They are targeted at slightly different groups and pockets depths.

In my own case, I live in California and I have the iPhone 6s from my employer for my work phone (hopefully I can change that soon as iOS 11 is killing my battery life). I kept my Irish number as well and just switched it to pre-pay so that I can keep the number and top it up a few time per year. I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on that number and it was recently stolen. As there are very good deals now on iPhone 7, I think that I might just get the 7 Plus to replace that. As it's a phone that I won't use that much (only when I'm back home a few times per year), it's a no brainer. I wouldn't spend crazy amounts on an X for that.

You need a Qi pad capable of 7.5W and a USB charger capable of 7.5w. At 5V for USB that means a charger capable of delivering 1.5 amps. I'm going to use an iPad charger (2.1A). I posted the Qi I ordered from Amazon earlier. I think it's good for 15W.

BTW, it's still going to be slower than a wired charger.

I see that. They are much more expensive than the 5W ones.

I went for these in the end
