Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Took less than 2 weeks from date I sent it to getting a reply that it was sent back to pas. Then 2 days I was told my department and within a week I had my start date

What sort of questions do they ask in the interview ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13 dothejoy

Happy to say I finally got assigned and received my start date! Gonna be working for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and am starting on 7 January!

Oh and my OOM was Batch 2, place 90. I wasn't really expecting to start before February, but there you go. :)

Anyone know anything about the DFA? How is it there? Are the people OK? :)

If you go back through the thread there are lots of details on the interview. Print off the information pas has sent you too they outline exactly what they expect from you. Also Google competency based interview techniques.
    Best of luck

Can anyone advise me on holiday entitlement? I'm due to start my new role on 14th of January, if I give 2 weeks notice tomorrow that'll leave me almost 4 weeks before I start. Will I get paid from my current job over the Christmas period? We save 4 days leave to cover Christmas holidays.
How are you all handling this?

I would imagine the second vetting is the more thorough vetting. If you are going to be with the guards or DOJ

I've had two. Going to the guards. One from them, one two months later from PAS. Hoping to hear a date very soon.

Yes, you can turn down people point and stay on the panel. People seem to have been placed fairly quickly too.

Yes. It states clearly in the email received today that one can refuse.

Unfortunately I missed the phone call, and they didn't indicate peoplepoint or any department :| i didn't ask/tick the box for peoplepoint when i made my application, however. i made sure not to because my mother worked there a few years ago and hated it (mostly due to the travel and how everything was organised/structured, seemed very frustrating at the time, at least).

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice in relation to references. I have listed my current employer and 2 other past employers. Long story short one of my references has left the company and while the company will confirm my position there and details of my roll etc. they cannot give me a character reference for obvious reasons.

I'm wondering how in depth is the reference check is? I have two other references including my current employer that are fine to use but will it be enough just to have the third reference confirm my employment etc.?

Sorry if that didn't make sense I'm just so nervous after coming this far I don't want to be let down by this.

Only your current employer is contacted.

That's not necessarily true. They have contacted my previous employer for a reference and told me they will also have to contact my current employer

Does anybody know how long it takes after they contact your referees to find out your start date and location?

About 2 weeks. I had a call 2 weeks ago and then call back for extra info yesterday. It was mentioned that DFA are looking for 100 staff to start in the new year. So anyone who lives near the passport office in Balbriggan could be placed there.

Fingers crossed you aren't waiting too long to hear back.

Can anybody advise? I was asked to submit a medical form to clearance which I did 3 weeks ago. I contacted the medical office and they had replied to public jobs about 2 weeks ago. I emailed public jobs and have had no response, am anxious now that I will no longer be considered for a position because they had been previously quite prompt at communicating with me. I don't have any medical condition but I had missed time off above the pro rata sick leave

I’m batch 5 and mid 80s. Phoned PAS and they said it’ll probably be February before the interviews come round.
My question is, if anyone here might know, I have 9 yrs previous working experience with the civil service. This position ended 6 yrs ago.
Should I be successful in getting a job, will my previous pay grade be taken into account or will I begin from the bottom. Many thanks

As far as I know all previous service and increments are taking into consideration just need to let the HR Dept know of the Dept that you are lucky to start with.

Sure they called me a month ago to say there was a position in store street, they asked would that suit me and I said somewhere where I could drive to would suit better as school drops etc. They said we’ll try move you to santry and get back to you. Haven’t heard anything since!!!

I didn't know you could pick where you wanted. A lady on here had to give up her position because she couldn't manage the journey and had small children.

Yeah I didn’t think so either. But the lady who rang asked if it suited me and I asked were there any positions in north county Dublin. She asked me where would suit and I told her. She said to leave it with her. I was actually really surprised.that being said, they might not be able to change it. I still haven’t heard.

Probably depends on the department I'd imagine. Great for you if you get something near you it's the dream! I'm only 5k from home. Will have to bus it into city but looking at it as a new adventure!! Best of luck

I had to give up my position because the location didn't suit me. I wish I'd been given the option of somewhere closer. It took huge effort to even apply for the job as I had been at home for 16 years. They really should have some mechanism whereby location is taken into consideration when offering positions. Hope you get somewhere suitable offered to you.

That’s awful. When you told them you felt you had to leave due to location did they not even try to accommodate you? That’s really bad. And yes they should try and place people close to where they live where possible

No, I think they were annoyed with me but I knew straight away the travelling wasn't going to work out for me so there was no point staying. They also paid me in error and I'm a month waiting for them to take the money back from my account. Christmas is a dangerous time to have extra money in the bank that doesn't belong to you!

I am in the same boat as yourself and have not heard anything.Spoke to a lady today in H/R in An Garda who advised that contracts will be going out next week with start dates of the 7th & 14th of Jan in Store St and Phoenix Park and seemingly there is a high number of candidates to be processed.I am a bit reluctant to hand in my notice until I receive my formal contract though.
