I've heard a lot about how it's next to impossible to get... not to mention how late it is now. But where should be my first ports of call? for both student complexes and houses? Thanks

Try the SU. They usually have a list of accommodation offered. Some may still be available. Otherwise, take a look around the noticeboards on campus. A lot of students put up notices looking for people to share with them, so it's worth a try, too.
