Ha.....old system, time to upgrade, try not to laugh.

Current system, which I built, is ancient now, maybe 8 years or more (cant remember to be honest) Cpu is an AMD Phemom II X3 720, MSI mobo with 4 Gig of OCZ gold ram of some sort. Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2 which was a little flyer in its time.
I reckon the case, power supply and Monitor are worth keeping but I could well be wrong on that. I used to keep informed about PC parts as new tech became available but I just drifted away from it over the years.


I could consider selling the existing PC and start from scratch or keep the bits I mentioned and upgrade as necessary.
Also considering just buying a prebuilt system to avoid and hassle but open to all suggestions.

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Standard home use, bit of home video editing, casual gaming


3. Do you need a copy of Windows? yes

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Possibly. I have a CM Storm Sniper case which is big and airy
A Corsair TX 750W power supply which I'd doubt has ever been taxed by the system.


5. Do you need a monitor? Again don't think so because I have a Ilyama Prolite B2409HDS which is in good shape. It is HDIM compatible.
I would consider a Monitor upgrade if people think its a good idea.


5a. If yes, what size do you need.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? It can do 1080p

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.] Have decent speakers and a Logitech G9 laser

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes]

8. How can you pay? [Any]

9. When are you purchasing? In the next month or therabouts

10. If you need help building it, where are you based?Louth


SEPERATE QUESTION- If you were to replace the graphics card with a cheap or second hand unit in order to give the system a small shot in the arm and eek out another year or two out of it what would you recommend?

I used a Q6600 OC'd which is only a bit better than your CPU until about a year or so ago. Suppose if you could get a 7850 for low to no money it might be worth it.

I'd say you would be better off getting a new PSU as your one is years old so capacitors will be quite old at this stage but saying that it may work fine but if it was me I would get a new one. I would go for a 80+ gold certified one.

I am rocking a old x58 system but I upgraded parts over the years new SSD and then a second, new CPU and a few GPU's. I will be upgrading to more than likely the upgraded Ryzen chips when they are released next year.

On the subject of Ryzen you should get a Ryzen 7 1700 system as it will last as long as your current with all those 8 cores and 16 threads.

That looks good to me. Actually don't need the speakers because the ones I have are fine. That case looks similar to what I currently have except mine has 2 big mounted fans.

Given how long your old machine lasted (and it's really not worth trying to upgrade that, just sell it as one unit for €120 or whatever you can get) I would say you might as well splash out a little to ensure you get a good few years out of it without having to touch it again.

I'd agree with the Ryzen 1600, the actual PC case of course is a personal thing and there's no right options, but I would get a better graphics card than a GTX1050Ti - either a GTX1060 6GB or RX580 8GB (though the latter are still either not in stock or still at inflated prices due to recent mining demand).

It wouldn't really be worth trying to upgrade your current one to get a boost as the processor would be too slow to keep up with any modern cards. Depends on the sort of games you play though. Modern FPS - no point. Strategy games - maybe, as a high framerate isn't necessary and you could probably play at much higher visual levels without the CPU bottleneck being too much issue.
