Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Surprised there isn't a thread on this already.

    So Ryanair are randomly cancelling flights from now until November 1st, not just flights already booked; but flights that can be booked from now until then.

    They've claimed that they have informed passengers who are supposed to fly up to and including the 20th of September if their flight has been cancelled, but many unhappy customers are turning up for flights having not been notified.

    Yeah they offer cheap flights, but would you book with them considering if your flight is randomly cancelled you'll end up paying way more with another airline due to the short notice.

    That's what Ryanair initially said:
    Up to 50 flights per day (less than 2% of flights) have been cancelled for the next six weeks.

    Today alone they've cancelled 81

    He has been trying to influence governments, airports, Brexit and other companies for years with his smug I know better attitude.

    Any time there is a case of mismanagement (Banks, AGS, Health Service, Schools, transport etc) you get the MOL fan boys out with the "If MOL was in charge he would sort this out in a trice" line.

    Turns out he can't even get a simple issue like staff rostering right, something that would be management 101 to any competent restaurant manager or 'corner shop owner'.

    Hopefully some other airline will start an ad campaign pointing out they have an efficient HR department.

    Ever done a roster for 12,000 staff spread about 85 different bases travelling to 200+ countries and contend with air traffic delays, ground delays etc. and ensure all meet very strict airline safety regulations?

    Methinks not.

    Doesn't excuse the current shambles, but to compare it to doing a roster for a shop or restaurant is plain stupid.

    Anytime there is usually staffing problems within a business the problem links right back to management being to stingy with money and not hiring enough staff or paying the staff they have.

    The only problem they have with rostering is that they don't have enough pilots. A load left Ryanair to go to Norwegian Airlines.

    Instead taking responsibility he is blaming the staff, air traffic controllers, regulators and the weather (which has been pretty good).

    I know someone who used to be a pilot with Ryanair. Had a party the day he left. O'Leary sets the tone from the top down and he is reaping what he has so enthusiastically sown over the years.

    I don't have enough details about how their rostering system works, but HR and Operations have to come into question.

    Perhaps not but you could be pretty certain MOL would be crowing from the rooftops if this was BA or Aer Lingus.

    When he's so quick to criticise everyone else from governments to competitors he has to expect it back which was the OP's point.

    Pretty good weather??? Are you serious?

    Substantial weather issues in many parts of Europe over the summer. - Just like rostering is like your corner shop, weather is the same all over Europe as in some village in Ireland

    ATC? - Substantial issues with French ATC during the summer.

    Airport delays - Spain was a disaster this year.

    Regulators? - Ryanair must adhere to new rules about calendar year.

    Ryanairs problam is all these issues came together and because of the tight scheduling they operate, it split at the seams.

    There's a general shortage of pilots, so not many avaialble to operate on short term contracts.

    As for 140 leaving for Norwegian - Ryanair have about 2500 pilots, so not the big exodus that the hysterical media make it out to be.


    Still no excuse for the shambles

    And you don't think O'Leary has any insight into HR and Ops? What do you think he does all day, mouth off about Aer Lingus in the media?

    He's the CEO, the buck stops in his office. That's the way it works and always has done. If it turns out that HR / Ops have been engaged in a cover-up of some description then fair enough, but I suspect that is very unlikely.

    Ryanair is suffering from a staff exodus because of the way they've treated their workers for decades. They can't hold onto staff now who use Ryanair for training and then leave for other companies where conditions are much better. All this stuff about holiday rosters is only half the truth, the reason it's an issue is because they have such a huge turnover of staff.

    Probably because EI's Stephen Kavanagh or Christoph Mueller before him weren't regularly appearing in the media to excoriate rivals, regulators or airport operators for precisely the kind of incompetence that's transpired at Ryanair this week.

    2% of about 1800 daily flights is about 35 flights every day for 6 weeks.
    That's a lot of disrupted plans for a lot of people.

    Meh, I was stunned to learn they operate over 2500 flights a day! That's genuinely staggering when you consider how much goes into one single flight.

    So emm ya I'm not sure I agree with you saying he doesn't know what he's at...

    I heard that this was something to do with the Ryanair calendar year being moved and essentially being increased this year by another 4 months.
    There are restrictions on the number of hours the pilots can be in the air over the year, so having the longer year means they need to trim the number of planes in the air as there are no pilots free to take them.

    Any truth to that? If so it makes sense, and not really down to Mick making a shambles of his roster.

    This sounds like a loaded facetious question, it's not meant to be.

    Would you prefer a flight to be manned by a pilot that is over-worked? Or would you have another solution for this?

    I understand how things can go tits up in a huge organisation but it is a disgrace that it's happened. There are going to be people stranded.

    Am..... plan ahead, manage the issue, pay and treat you staff well so they won't leave, hire new pilots and most importantly don't sell flights you can't operate.

    Would you agree that Ryanair pilots are the most likely to be stressed and over-worked because of this staffing mismanagement?

    They say these cancellations will last for six weeks. Regardless of the reasons for these cancellations if they know x number of flights per day will not be flying why not make a decision now on what those flights will be rather than doing it on a rolling basis? This could help people plan in advance, cancel hotels without losing out, make alternative arrangements, etc.

    According to the Aviation forum they're suddenly offering a 10k sigining on bonus to all and any new pilots. Wouldn't be an issue if they hasn't treated them so badly for so long.

    Well the pilots are going to be flying the routes they are told to fly within the safety guidelines, so I'm sure they wont be stressed about it.
    The other staff though will be losing hours so there will be an impact there.

    You call this staff mismanagement, but is this not a case of firefighting the restrictions that have been put on them?
    Again, just to re-iterate, I don't know the full story and am not aware of any staff cutbacks or pilot exodus.

    I think that they are cancelling the flights that have least numbers on them to have least passenger impact.


    It's a sh*tty situation, I wouldn't like to have a flight cancelled last minute and f*ck up y plans.

    They've been offering that for a few months. They are hiring andother 1000 pilots to meet their expansion plans.

    And despite what the negative ninnies say, all pilots are offered eirth a five year contratct with a guaranteed number of horus or full time employment.

    Cabin crew get 1-3 year contracts. Easy to pick up additional cabin crew - not easy to get extra trained pilots as they simply are not out there and trainign schools are at their max capacity too.
