Somehow I can only think of examples from children's books/films. Not sure what that says about me :p

    Charlotte in Charlotte's Web.

Charlie in All Dogs go to Heaven.

Dobby in Harry Potter is a killer too.

    Bambi's mother.

Just realised none of the above are human either :p

For me it was the horse in the book 'The Horse Whisperer'.

Just remembered Tom Robinson's death in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. I remember reading it and just thinking of the injustice of it all.

Don't read "Go Set A Watchman." It reached back into my childhood and killed one of my oldest fictional friends.

Betty Francis from Mad Men. She led such an unhappy life, then when she started doing something she wanted she's diagnosed with cancer.

I still think it was a peculiarly mean spirited decision from the writers of the show to give her that fate. Over the seasons we were originally encouraged to have sympathy for her, then to admire her, then to hate her, then finally to have some sort of respect towards her - and then she just gets cancer and that's that - Meanwhile Don drinks around and sleeps around his latest existential crisis, before finally dreaming up the Ad that gives him inner peace. I thought it was a cheap way to wrap her story -line up.

To this day I can't decide if Mad-Men is the single greatest TV series of all time or just a big load of baloney.

    i was physically shaking watching
glenn die in the walking dead

even though i knew it was coming, he was such a long standing character that it felt like he'd be there forever, despite
    dying in the comics too

the suddenness, the brutality of it, the fact
    negan didnt give a ****
he was gone, a fan favourite, just like that.

Harry Stamper in Armageddon. When he pushes AJ back into the elevator and sacrifices himself by detonating the bomb. The whole scene with Harry telling AJ he always thought of him as a son, his final goodbye to his daughter and his crew, and then the flashbacks right before the bomb goes off. Even now I can't watch that scene without getting misty eyed.

    Rita
in Dexter. That properly shocked me.

    Yea - I loved her!
    Fcuk that whole episode.

Omar Little took me by surprise, that was brutal.
    .

Not so much that he died, you'd kinda expect that to happen, but how was the shocker!

Someone else mentioned Optimus Prime (presume in the original animated Transformers movie rather than the god-awful Bay films).. But actually the reformatting of Megatron to Galvatron and his revenge on Starscream were also the end of the original line of Transformers.. Yes there was a season after this film but it mostly sucked :(

Some of the dialogue in that scene with Unicron (Orson Wells in his last role) is very mature for what was a 80s kids film, not to mention graphically killing off most of the original characters within the first 30 minutes.

Transformers was never the same for me after that.

The episode where Optimus came back to life was pretty messed up for a kids show toom

Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi, after he turns on the Emperor.

Luke… help me take this mask off.
    Luke: But you’ll die.
DV: Nothing can stop that now. Just for once, let me look on you with my own eyes.

The pit pony that dies in the mine at the end of 'The Littlest Horse Theives' (also called Escape from the Dark)

It must be over 30 years since I saw the movie but still remember that. Horrific.

Can't believe no one has mentioned
    Keith
in One Tree Hill yet. A big fan of how that was done and the aftermath handled very well.

Already mentioned but agree about Mufasa, Brendan Fraser's death in Scrubs and John Ritter's RL death in 8 Simple Rules (although wasn't a massive fan of the show).

Regarding GOT there's a lot of shocking deaths but
    Ned's
is the one that kicks everything off and still resonates to this day with me.

Also thought while they weren't huge characters
    Percy & Reed's
deaths in Grey's Anatomy were harrowing. Two brilliant episodes of TV those.

Bambi's death didn't have much of an impact on me as a kid, Mufasa's death definitely did but worst of all was Artax, the horse in The Neverending Story, just GET OUT OF THE FÚCKING MUD!

Even at the end with Limahl's song I remember thinking "no, that's the worst ending ever", you then see Atreyu and Artax galloping through the fields and all is well in the world again!

Thought the tributes that they did to the actor, John Spencer, in the final series were lovely.

    Obvious one but
    Ned Stark
in Game of Thrones. All the subsequent shock deaths didn't bother me at all because I knew this was GoT's "thing" but I watched season 1 knowing nothing about the books and fully expected
Sean Bean to be lead man who couldn't be touched
. Think I sat in silence with my mouth open throughout the end credits!

Not a death but Homer saying goodbye to his mother (after briefly being reunited with her after more than 25 years) when she had to go back underground (she was a fugitive).

That still of him staring at the stars in the desert, and the music...

An utterly hilarious episode yet The Simpsons completely stopped taking the piss just for those few moments and it was genuinely heartbreaking. A beautifully done piece of TV.

Years later, when The Simpsons had become irredeemably sh1t, Mother Simpson died during another reunion - and Homer found her passed away on the couch during the night following an argument with her (he went down to her during the night to apologise). It was briefly handled well but then just became horrible. Really summed up for me how bad The Simpsons became.

I was just scanning the thread to see if anyone said this one before me because it was who I was going to say too. Surprised it has had 3 or 4 mentioned.

Not because he was anything great really - but mainly because it was the first character I saw as a child actually die off. So some loss of innocence in the world of good always winning over evil was had there.

The first character that I saw die in actual movies was the kid who shoots himself in Dead Poets Society. So that being a first it also had an effect.

What was also very well done was Buffy's mother (It's years old so tough :) ). No fantasy element (Mostly). All the reactions from Buffy's friends was spot on. The lack of music throughout really lays on the tension.

The fight with the vampire at the end was brilliantly done: Stripping away the music and witticisms really highlighted how silly the premise is without undermining it.

Another vote for Lt.Col Henry Blake in M*A*S*H, partly for the way it was handled: no drama or histrionics, just Radar relaying the message as calmly as he could. The shock came from the way he left, all happy to be going home and everyone happy for him - and the cast only found out as they were filming.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Last episode of Mash was harrowing. Hawkeye remembering the woman on the bus who suffocated the chicken because it's noise put them in danger and then the realization that she actually suffocated her own child.

M*A*S*H the musicians Charles was conducting music with in the final episode. They were killed just before the ceasefire - truly pointless deaths.

Mrs Landingham - The West Wing so unexpected.

Leo McGarry (John Spencer) The West Wing The actor has a heart attack and passed away. It was very nicely handled.

    Spock in Star Trek II

    Rue in The Hunger Games.

Adam Carter - Spooks. Although you could never take a character for granted in that show because they would kill them with wanton abandon, but Adam dying was the most jaw dropping, unexpected death that I never saw coming. I was full sure there was still hope even when his comm link went dead :pac:

And Ruth?? Ruth's death broke my heart. :(:(:(

Can't remember the film or TV programme, but it's an old black and white Lassie one, where a dog is beaten or kicked to death. Saw it when I was 6 or so and haven't tolerated any form of animal cruelty since.

The lads being killed (presumably) at the end of Blackadder IV made me see the stupidity of war. Well that and near the end of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly where Eastwood gives a dying soldier a last pull from a cigar.

As others have said the final scene of Blackadder Goes Forth. That's another one of mine because we see a grim scene in an otherwise humorous comedy. We see the lads getting ready for the push, and their humanity is shown more. Lieutenant George says that he's scared despite his usual upbeat naivety that he usually shows, Captain Darling who was always portrayed as a twat says that he hoped to return home and marry his sweetheart and we see a sympathetic side to him, then Baldrick says that he has a cunning plan but Captain Blackadder already knows they're all most likely going to the death so he say it will have to wait. And of course, the image of them going over the trench. Such a great ending though.
