My wife and I have sold our property in the UK and are relocating to live in Southern Ireland to take early retirement and be with our grandchildren who reside there. I am trying to make arrangements regarding car insurance and house insurance. My current car insurance policy will cease to be valid when I leave these shores so I need one to cover me when I arrive in ROI. I will also naturally need to arrange house insurance as well. Whilst I know my new address over there obviously contracts have not yet been exchanged so I am not yet an Irish homeowner.

My son highly recommended I contact The Bank Of Ireland to see what arrangements can be made so that I will have suitable cover for the day my wheels touch Irish soil. Am I correct in assuming I cannot have an Irish bank account until I am a resident ??

Any advice from BOI staff or information from anyone who has also experienced such a dilemma would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Borodin55,

Thanks for getting in contact with us here through Boards.

I can confirm that you can open a current account with us when you're not a resident in Ireland and I have given a link here that you can use to open an account online or you can call our account opening section on 00353 1 4044000 and the advisers there will be more than happy to help apply for a current account.
In relation to both the home and car insurance the car would need to be registered in Ireland before we could offer insurance on it and you would need to be in full possession of the house before insurance could be fully processed. But I've given 2 links here and here that have all the information needed for both our car insurance and home insurance offers.

    Thanks again for your message.
    Darren.
