Surely the number of clubs a county has reflects the population in the counties. Kilkenny is a relative small county with a lot fewer clubs than Cork with numerous clubs and a big population. Kilkenny couldn't possible have any more clubs at senior etc. Imagine what they might achieve if they had!!!!

Bit of a joke Corks third tier not allowed take part at Junior. Presumably if Cork renamed the Intermediate championship as Junior they'd be allowed take part in the Junior All Ire series which highlight what a farce the grading is.

This is all on Cork county board and the Cork clubs though.

There is nothing whatsoever stopping the Cork county board (apart from the Cork clubs) calling the first tier senior, second tier intermediate and third tier junior.

A problem entirely of Cork Gaa's own making.

Just on that point we only have 12 teams in Senior and 12 teams in Intermediate so in comparison to other counties that have bigger numbers in those grades our Juniors are potentially quite strong. Our best Junior team is theoretically our 25th best team whereas in other counties they could be 36th or more - don't know how the Cork championship works.

Hi JJ's LH - quick question on today's examiner it says Conahy Shamrocks will be playing Junior in Kilkenny again next year - is that correct???

I thought I read somewhere over the weekend that it was O'Loughlin Gaels 2nd team that won the JHC in Kilkenny but they were not eligible to take part in provincial championship

Bit mad that a junior team wins an All Ireland but doesn't move up a grade. I understand the situation with losing the county final but i think there should be a clause that if you go on and win the All Ireland that overrides everything eelse and you should move to intermediate

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,039 ✭✭✭KrustyUCC

Similar happened to St Marys Cahirsiveen a few years ago

Won Intermediate All Ireland but didn't go up Senior in Kerry

That does make a joke of gradings

As it hasn't happened until now perhaps a new rule might be considered. Such as not allowing Conahy to participate in Final next year. But the internal workings of a county cannot be interfered with. As was posted here already, it's up to each county board to run their own affairs with regards to number of senior clubs etc.

Conahy would dearly love to play in intermediate but they'll have to earn it in Kilkenny.

Same issue in Tipp but as Boom Boom says no one to blame only our own clubs and county boards. We have 32 senior teams in Tipp because at least 16 of them simply won't admit they are not up to standard, these same clubs will pull every trick in the book to get their underage teams graded in B to win a handy county but when it comes to adult hurling they have to be johnny big balls and be a Senior club.

Unfortunately Daniel Kearney isn't going to be involved with the Cork Hurlers this year as he has opted out.

Great player but this gives an opening to someone else to step up now.

We will miss Kearney but def gives more opportunities for lads to stake a claim

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,043 ✭✭✭Rosita

It'd be great if the whole Cork panel retired it'd give such a chance to new players to stake a claim.

The number of senior clubs a county has reflects they way they organise themselves more than it does the population. Clare has 16 senior clubs, Galway has 24. Both would have smaller hurling populations than Kilkenny.

There is no great evidence that a higher number of senior clubs means anything or that your excitement about Kilkeny's potential is realistic. Carrickshock and Ballyragget were promoted from Intermediate in recent years in Kilkenny and were relegated fairly soon after. There's not huge strength bubbling under the senior grade in Kilkenny so a higher number of senior clubs would only reduce standards which of course is logical.

Considering Carrickshock actually won the Intermediate AI I dont think your statement holds much merit, what it shows is that they have an extremly competitive Senior Club championship, similar to what Galway had a number of years ago, and is the model all counties should strive for ie the right teams playing at the right level.

Wonder how long it's been since there's been a schools/minor team without a "Jack" in the starting 15
