Basically that was the 25th best team in Kerry but 53rd in Cork. There's the difference

    Kerry have senior, intermediate, junior

Cork have premier senior, Senior A, premier intermediate, intermediate A, junior

So you're 5 competitions down in Cork at that stage

It's similar in hurling too. In Tipperary next year they are actually renaming their 2nd senior grade to intermediate so the winners can go into the Munster intermediate club championship

Junior football has been diluted hugely in Cork. There were only 4 first teams playing in the Duhallow JFC this year. Boherbue have won 5 JFC in a row. Somewhat unprecedented. There was a time when the Duhallow JFC was bitterly contested by 10+ first teams. Gneeveguilla are a division 2 team in Kerry and won the Premier Junior Champtionship in Kerry. It's not a fair comparison.

Look at how many duhallow Junior A teams have been promoted to the intermediate grade in the last 10 years or so. The creation of extra grades in Cork has diluted the divisional Junior championships in Cork in both codes. There is also no county league anymore in Cork Junior football, one was run for a few years but it was a shambles with forfeits etc.

I play for a Junior A football team and we often beat the lower intermediate teams in challenge games. There is little difference there. Just look what Iveleary did on coming up from Junior A and what Knocknagree have done in a few short years.

There are too many grades in Cork GAA now. It's to the detriment of the county team too.

The winner of the Junior football competitions in the various Munster counties this year

Kerry - 25th best team in the county [24 teams in the senior and intermediate football championships]

Limerick - 25th best team in the county [24 teams in the senior and intermediate football championships]

Clare - 26th best team in the county [25 teams in the senior and intermediate football championships]

Waterford - 29th best team in the county [28 teams in the senior and intermediate football championships]

Tipperary - 32nd best team in the county [31 teams in the senior and intermediate football championships]

This is a problem entirely of Cork GAA's making and the solution is entirely within Cork GAA's remit - change the names of the various tiers so there isn't 2 different tiers at senior and 2 different tiers at intermediate.

I agree on a fair few points but don’t think it’s that simple. A big part to me is Urbanisation which is slowly killing off the standard in some of the Junior grades. Junior A Carbery has a lot of team competing compared to other divisions (21 going down to 16) but only a few teams that are competitive at county. Carbery divisional team is probably a reflection of this compared to previous decades.

Cork GAA has been in trouble since mid 90s really. Club game has been on downer ever since. City teams are just nowhere near as strong as they were.

Was a time the Glen, Rockies and Barrs would be good enough to take on intercounty teams.

Football in particular is in a desperate state. Frank Murphy has a lot of this on his hands but sadly the Yes men behind him are no better

The one thing I will say is the club championship has been brilliant last couple years.

Not talking about how cork teams compete once they go into Munster but basically the actual Cork championship, very competitive. Bringing in relegation has made every game count

I'd be hopeful it will improve further under Kevin O'Donovan , possibly then the impact of cork teams at senior level in Munster club championship will improve

It's completely of Cork County Boards own making.

They just called there 2nd highest grade Senior A so that the Divisions can't pick these Senior A club players for the Premier Senior championship.

The Cork County Board want to weaken the Divisions so as to get rid of them.

Barrs 2 goals up at ht v Stacks. Certainly a surprise but very well worth their lead.

Stacks yet to get going, should be a very interesting second half.

Barrs yet to score in the second half. Really lucky to be still a point up at the water break

Stacks have woke up and have it down to a point.

Sherlock needs to get on the ball, way too quiet.

    Shields is on.

    Great goal for the Barrs!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,121 ✭✭✭zetecescort

Goal with 2 min left surely seals it for the Barrs, 2-8 to 0-9

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,542 ✭✭✭The White Feather

Goal for Stacks. Never say its over until its over against a kerry team

Outstanding last 10 by the Barrs. Super defending, confidence on the ball and a nicely taken goal too which was needed in the end.

    Barrs win by 2-09 v 1-10

Delighted to see a Cork club win the senior Munster title. Fully deserved.

Colm Scully the man of the match.

Night and day performance to the last time they played each other, didn't see this win coming but delighted nonetheless.

    Phew!! its over!!! Great win!!

    Quick question.

St. Finbarr's National Hurling & Football Club is a very odd name.

Never seen national used in a name before and usually you only see specific sports named in the likes of Ulster where you get GFC.

Is it just that they are a very old club or is there a story to the name ?

    McGrath Cup Final, Fitzgerald Stadium

    Full Time

    Kerry 2-17 Cork 0-11

This is as expected and probably I expected a lot worse of a hammering. We are away to Roscommon in the league next sunday and the league is where we can properly gauge things

We are miles off the pace.

It's going be another poor year

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,121 ✭✭✭zetecescort

I wouldn’t be that negative about the Cork football team. The team that went out against Kerry wasn’t near full strength. If Cork can get this 15 out on the field whether it be during league and championship I think they’ll be very competitive. Now that is easier said than done with injuries but I’d imagine Ricken will be building towards something close to this.

    1. Michael Martin
    2. Sam Ryan
    3. Daniel O’Mahony
    4. Kevin Flahive
    5. Rory Maguire
    6. Sean Meehan
    7. Sean Powter
    8. Ian Maguire
    9. Killian O’Hanlon
    10. Mark Collins
    11. Blake Murphy
    12. Brian Hayes
    13. Mark Cronin
    14. Brian Hurley
    15. Cathail O’Mahony
