Never know what you’re getting with the footballers but great to not be limping into the next round after two losses like a lot of us would have expected. Has been some turnaround since Clare.

If Cork turn up they can cause any of these teams a bit of bother.

Jaysus there’s a lot of sour Mayo lads on twitter! You’d swear they’ve a Devine right to win an all Ireland!

They always find a way not to win. Cork needed to beat them though. We owe it to them after them knocking us out in 2011 2014 and 2017. We did a massive favour for Kerry too. They could now potentially win the All Ireland.

So could Cork. Unfortunate to lose to Kerry and 3 points better than the League Champions (who dismantled Kerry themselves a few weeks back).

There's no outstanding team in this Championship. Probably the most open it's been in 20 years.

Mayo have been the second best team in the country (i sound like Micko with that one!) over the past decade, so this win shouldn't be played down at all. We sent out a massive statement of intent this evening. We badly owed Mayo a beating as well! Remember now that we were unlucky not to beat Kerry, so we really have turned the corner since that defeat to Clare.

It's a home prelim quarter final now, and whoever it is bring them on i say. The footballers get a lot criticism and bad press at times, but they deserve all the praise and all the dues today. Well done to John Cleary and the players and Rebels Abu!

Any chance Cathal O Mahony will be available for the next game?

There’s no easy games from here on out so a nice draw to be fair. Will be a great day out in the Pairc.

Awful time for this game. Saturday at 2pm.

disgraceful throw in time tbh. Its as if there is no debt to be paid and they don't want to attract people to the game, and not just cork people, what time would you have to leave Roscommon to make Cork for 1 or so, 9

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,733 ✭✭✭Duckworth_Luas

Roscommon are thinking the very same about Cork!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,545 ✭✭✭Seadin

It's a 50/50 game but Roscommon are no Kerry or Dublin so if Cork can turn up on the day and put on a performance like the Mayo game and Kerry game, we are more than capable of getting a result against Roscommon. Home advantage will come into play too. Consistency will be Corks key here and if they can do this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

We can't afford to take them for granted, but that's a winnable game all the same. We beat Roscommon on our way to winning the 1990 and 2010 all Irelands, so who knows maybe another one is on the cards if we win! An all Ireland this year though would be well ahead of schedule. Giving Kerry a game and a quarter final appearance was my objective for the year.

Roscommon won't fear us at all, but we won't fear them either.😁 Both teams certainly will be happy with the draw.

That sounds about right. Realistically we couldn't expect much more out of them if they got past Roscommon next weekend and into a QF appearance. Nobody would have seen that at the start of the year imo.

Looking forward to Saturday. Have managed to nab some premium tickets so should be enjoyable. Christ I'd love the lads to get a day out in Croke Park in a Q/F. Would be a fantastic example of the progress made this year. We have nothing to fear against Roscommon, nothing.

Big question for Cleary exists though, and would like to hear thoughts on this, does Sherlock start? He's an unbelievable impact sub, but seems to stutter when starting.

Brendan Cawley from Kildare is reffing it, by the way

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,121 ✭✭✭zetecescort

Despite doubts over Hurley and Deane we have named an unchanged team from the Mayo game, Sherlock on the bench

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

If we don't start Sherlock then that will be an issue if we lose imo. Cork football does have a habit of making two steps backwards, after moving a step forward. When you think that Cork football is finally making some progress, you get smacked right in the face again! For that reason i'm not taking Roscommon for granted at all.

Good news, Patrick Horgan has signaled his intent to keep playing for Cork next year. He will be 36 and it will be his 17th year playing with Cork.

“If I’m lucky enough to fight for a position by the end of this year, I’d love to. I feel great,” said Horgan. “I feel fitter than I ever felt. I feel fast, I feel sharp. In the GAA, when players go into their 30s, there is a whole different change towards (them). If you blink wrong on the pitch, it’s, ‘Oh no, he’s gone’. It’s so wrong. If fellas want to play, and I want to play, age doesn’t matter.”

“I’m happy with it [2023 form]. I have always put in the same effort every year. How that is seen then is different. Whatever happened, happened. I’m just happy I was on the squad this year to fight for a position. There’s 40 on our squad, it’s really competitive, a few for every position.”

First 20 mins and Cork have been terrible. Roscommon ahead by 3. They should be further ahead.

Lot of bad passes and guys running into trouble non stop.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,720 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

What did you expect, same old Cork footballers.

Useless when expected to do well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,542 ✭✭✭The White Feather

Funnily enough they responded a bit after that. We won a few kick outs in a row, got a few points before the half ended and its half time now. Roscommon ahead by 1 point. 7 points to 6.

It seems if we go a bit more direct that we are doing better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 962 ✭✭✭thefa

Only one down at half time. Only been decent for the first 10 mins and last 5 of the half.

Defense isn’t doing bad at all. Being patient.

Getting a bit desperate with the play when we get into their half. Decision making went to pot for a while but showing a bit of resilience.

    Maybe they heard me lol

Need to move the ball faster, this slow handpassing rubbish plays into Roscommons hands.

Cork were far from useless in the first half. Only a point down. The last 20 is where we will win or lose, its when we've played our best football and get most of our scores.
