Wasn't there some sort of development program a good few years ago set up by County Borard to devlop football? Had the likes of Counihan and Canty involved.

It's not really worked well bar 2019 if honest.

He doesn't seem to want to work as hard as what is needed for the current set up. But we need forwards who can score, not just work.

They had something like a 5 year plan for Cork football ol but that hasnt brought about a whole lot for Cork football. Think It could have been set up around 2017. I don't want to sound negative but it fascinates me how Kerry can still develop so many good players and Cork can't with far more to choose from. Are we saying we don't have the players that it's not working out for us? Why can't we try and do what Kerry are doing to see if it works or not?

Definite progress this year. Credit to Cleary and the backroom team. Derry the better team yesterday. Cork need players that can break the tackle and kick points when joining the lateral passing movements. Wind was a factor yesterday, but Derry were able to do it better than Cork.

When ya look at Minor and U20 roll of honour I think Cork and Kerry are one and two in both. I'm open for correction but think we are ahead in u20 and up to 2014 when Kerry won those 5 in a row the minors were close too.

But then you get to senior level and its what 38 to 7?

I'm not saying we should have 30+ but even as our second sport we should be in double figures at very least.

The last natural forward Cork had was Colm O Neill. We are seriously lacking players with being creative and scoring ability and have been since 2014.

Some serious questions need to be asked and answered.

Not having no go at this team or management. The character they showed after clare defeat should be applauded but we are miles off big two.

Preparation of intercounty teams got more professional in the mid 90's, with Limerick under Tom Ryan and Clare under Ger Loughnane. The Armagh and Tyrone teams in the early 00's raised the bar again. We in Cork were slow to react to this changing landscape. The players in both hurling and football panels had to go strike, to get the professional setup and conditions that was required to win all Irelands. Yeah we neglected our player development for years as well, although that's finally turned around in hurling thankfully. In football we're still not quite there yet. We can't produce quality forwards of intercounty standard in the way that Kerry do.

Of course there was complacency as well. The thinking was that sure we're Cork we're entitled to success after all. The third hurling strike had a massive negative impact on the county as well. Frank Murphy should have been booted out on his hole after that. Of course there's the finances as well. The Stade De Frank is well over budget. The debt for it is still spiraling out of control. We don't have a sponsorship deal as good as Dublins.

We don't even receive the government grants that Dublin has or had received! We don't have a financial backer of JP McManus like resources either. We have the playing numbers and the potential to be a strong contender in both senior codes, but the finances are my main worry and concern right now. How can we adequately finance the preparation of our intercounty squads, when we're still paying off a stadium debt that's still running into the millions?

Of course we won an underage football all Ireland double in 2019. Despite that we're still a fair bit off the pace at senior level though.

You are correct in that. We are very close with Kerry in minor and u20 and are at least mostly competitive with them at underage. Something goes wrong at Senior level which I can't pen point at all as to how it happens. Is there politics involved somewhere I can't say for sure but obviously you look at both teams in Senior and there has been always a massive gulf in class. Even good Cork teams in the past couldn't beat them or found it difficult to beat them in the circumstances.

People here would know better but it was widely known that footballers were treated worse than hurlers back in the day.

Now how true that is I don't know but I'm sure plenty in here know more.

Politics in Cork gaa had been around long time alright. I know a lad who scored 1-16 in divisional final and 1-14 in County final in same year and could not make Cork minor team as he would not go to certain school in Fermoy. That was back in early 00s.

I'm sure things have improved and from what I hear things have but we are playing catch up

Cork are on the right track. Got their fitness in shape this year, another year will bring that on further. Defence is looking solid, good shape for most of the game. Last phase of a teams development is always the scoing, probably another year or two away from that

I had a book years ago i lost it though sadly, but it was about classic hurling and football matches over the years, and the footballers in 1973 featured in it. The footballers were treated appallingly in comparison to the hurlers. Their coach Donie O'Donovan kicked up a holy fuss about it though, and things did improve. His son was a total and utter out and out Frank man though!

Back in the 70's a man from my hometown of Youghal Willie Walsh was dropped from the panel after the 1975 championship. I think he scored a hat trick in the 1969 Munster final. That was our first championship win over Tipp since 1957. He was one of our main players on the 1970 all Ireland winning team as well.

He missed out on being a part of the three in a row team, but i wonder if he was from the Barrs, the Glen or the Rockies would he have been kept on the panel? Some of the selectors only agenda, would be to have as many of their own club men on the panel as possible!

Seriously though if i was involved in the team selection, and we had a Youghal man and a man from the Barrs fighting it out for a position on the team, if the Barrs man was better i'd go with him and the Youghal fella can sit down on the bench! We're not the only county to have suffered from politics and agendas over the years, but ourselves and Limerick before they came good, were the two worst examples of a county plagued by politics and agendas imo. Tipp back in the days when Tommy Barrett was running the show, were infamous for it as well.

Great video this of the all Ireland winning celebrations in 1999, there's great footage of the dressing room celebrations and the homecoming. 1999 was the last time the Cork teams took the traditional homecoming route, of going from Kent station down McCurtain Street, rounding Barrys corner and going down Patricks Bridge and then down to Patrick Street. In 2004 and 2005, the team went down Brian Boru Bridge and down to the Parnell Place/South Mall junction. The footballers in 2010 came home on the bus, and went to the same spot again.

I think the authorities decided to ban the old Barrys corner route, over health and safety concerns. But yeah that team will be presented before the crowd, for the 25th anniversary next year. I find that to be very sad and depressing, because i remember that time like it was yesterday. Time really does fly as we get older sadly.

Jesus 25 years next year. Holy smokes.

I still remember that game. We stayed up that weekend. I was in the lower Canel nearer the Cusack side. The upper if I remember was still been redeveloped. I was near top part just under the roofed area sitting next to kilkenny man who had a banner like Japan flag but obviously in Black and Amber.

I was one of last people to leave Croker that day. Was first time I saw Hurlers lift Liam. Great memory.

If Colin Corkery and Steven O'Brien were playing in 1999, we would have won a third double 1890, 1990 and 1999. Maybe the two lad's didn't want to be a part of the panel for whatever reason. They played against Kerry in the 2000 championship though. Cork football has had so many of these, could have and should have moments over the years sadly. 1999 was an all Ireland we kicked away imo. In saying that though that was a fine Meath team as well. It's hard to believe that Meath haven't won an all Ireland since!

Was at the football final versus Meath -was my first time in Croker and we were lower Canal. The upper tier was definitely only partially built alright. There was rain for a spell too.

Kavanagh got a lovely goal. Don't think we can complain too much about losing that one though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭Seadin

I think we should have won the 1988, 1993, 1999 and 2009 All Irelands as well, just didn't get over the line with those games when I felt we were good enough to do so. Cork have lost double the amount of All Irelands they have won.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

We weren't good enough on the day, but Colin Corkery and Steven O'Brien would've made a massive difference if they were there imo.

Best of luck to the camogie team today. Up against it facing the defending champions and our form has been patchy this year but hopefully we perform. Live coverage on RTE

    Intermediates beaten by Meath yesterday

Cork 0-3 Kilkenny 1-4 after 16 min. Kilkenny well on top and should be further in front, their goal soft enough, just a long ball down the middle

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,119 ✭✭✭zetecescort

badly needed Amy O'Connor goal helps us to get back level, 1-5 each after 24 min

poor first 15 min or so but have finished the half well, Cork 1-8 Kilkenny 1-6 HT

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,119 ✭✭✭zetecescort

Cork 3 up with 10 to go. Thompson on since the 45th minute

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭Seadin

    That referee is a disgrace

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭Seadin

    2 clear penalties not given.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭Seadin

Cork win but certainly not helped by the ref. It would have been a sin if they didnt win it. 2 clear penalties, they were well out of sight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 759 ✭✭✭Rega

I thought after the second penalty decision not going their way, that the game would go from them. Fair play to the team. Great win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭The White Feather

Great to get that win. Especially knowing Kilkenny fans coming in to see the them getting beaten by Cork!

Should have at least 1 penalty with a blatant jersey pull. We had numerous chances to finish them off but didn't do it properly which made for a nervous finish.

Did 'i hear that correctly? Cork in the semis for 44 years in a row?! Wow!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,119 ✭✭✭zetecescort

Great result. Like I said earlier our form wasn't great but that was a really good display.

Ref was consistent all game on the charging with the ball for the 1st penalty claim, 2nd was a blatant one alright

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,215 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

Umpire has to see that pull. Was right in front of him. Glad it didn't affect the outcome though.

    Enjoyable game all the same.
