Recommendation - budget bookshelf speakers

    Hi,

I'm looking for some advice, I'm hoping to looking to upgrade my bog standard PC speakers from many many years ago, old and messy ( ancient logitech x530 5.1 system) to some nicer clean bookshelf speakers & an amp (or receiver..).  Not looking for anything overkill as I feel anything would be an improvement over what I have currently!

Desktop is in sitting roomin corner of the room - however I've an LG 49UJ670v in the far corner, with long hdmi cable going from the desktop to the TV as a "second monitor".

The speakers may be better utilized with that.

Torn between pairing the speakers with the TV and getting an AV receiver - [I don't have a set top box, or games console, or any other HDMI connections, so unsure of the need] - or else just getting a basic enough amp like the "lepy 2020" on amazon, and using it with some decent budget bookshelf speakers like the Mission LR2's, again I don't know a huge amount about bookshelf speakers, I'm just going on reviews and things I've seen mentioned frequently - Wharefedale 220s, q acoustics 2020is etc

As it's an apartment, I'm wary of getting anything too excessive so hoping to keep the budget reasonable.

Any suggestions? Would hopefully order something early next week or else consider driving up from Dublin a weekend to see in the shop!

Hi if you wanted to go for a budget 5.1 system something like the

    Pioneer VSX531
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-201913-vsx531.aspx

aired with the denon sys2020 speaker package
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-202313-deno-sys2020-blk.aspx

would be a good package for the money.

If you decided to go 2 channel

    The Yamaha AS201
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-12592-as201-black.aspx

    matched with the Wharfedale 220's

Hi Stephen, thanks for this, after dividing out the bills - I've decided to take a more frugal approach this month - I've ordered a small Lepy 2024 amplifier on Amazon to get started for the desk (conscious that its a crap amp-but it's just a v short term option- would much prefer your option!)

I think I'll put in an order for the Wharfedales 220's with yourselves in the morning - could I add some speaker cable and and RCA cable to the order as well? Unsure how much I'd need for just a simple desk setup.

Is it just the black 220's or do you have any Walnut/Wood effect ones that would suit?  Not a major deciding factor, as I'd take sound quality over the colour preference, but just curious.

I'll start with the 220's and treat myself to a proper AV receiver for Christmas I'd say.

    thanks!

    Hi Shlippery.

    No worries at all.

Unfortunately it is only the Black finish that we currently stock.

You can order via our website or drop me your contact number and we can give you a call for the order.

    Hi Kenny,

Cheers, I suppose it's as handy to put the order in on the website now - any suggestions re: speaker wire?  or is it all the same?

    Hi Shlippery.

There are different qualities in speaker cables.
Starting at £1.19 per meter for the Symphony 100
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-900187-symphony-100.aspx

Right up to £100's per meter.

For the 220's I would go for something like the Symphony 200 priced at £1.79 per meter

Agh, had just placed an order but my Revolut card is giving me grief.
" Your card was not authorized for that amount. Please try again. Please retry your credit card."

I'll try again Monday - because my funds are held up "pending"  It's all sitting in the cart ready to go though, thanks Kenny!

    Hi Shlippery,

If you send a PM to Kenny with your contact details he will get in touch with you, far better to deal with matters like this privately, one-to-one.

    Cheers,

    Ritz.
