Is there a difference between owning share for the short and long term?

I have owned share, through inheritance, in the past, their dividends went toward my school fees when I was young and more recently their sale helped pay for my house.

I was wondering, is there a difference between owning shares for the long term to gain income from the dividends and owning share in the short term to sell them at a profit?

I would think if your trading in the short term you wouldn't own them long enough to get a dividend payment.

If I wanted to trade myself online are there good websites/apps for doing this?
