    Hi,

We had an infestation of rats in our house which has cost us upwards of €2000 to have fixed and the work has damaged our flooring etc. The work is now completed but the floors etc will need to be replaced.

Can anyone advice if I can claim this through our home insurance?

    Many thanks.

Damage by rodents would be excluded by the insurers if I remember correctly

It would be excluded I'm afraid. For future reference, if anything happens in your home that you think you will claim for, notify your insurers before you do any work, as they will want to inspect it. The exception to this is any action necessary to minimise a loss, such as stopping a burst pipe

For interest, what would be the actual and typical exclusion wording that would take this outside the scope of policy cover ?

Would it make any difference if the OP had accidental damage cover on the property ?

It is usually along the lines of the following. It wouldn't be classed as an Accidental Damage

    Excludes Loss or damage:
    • caused by wear and tear or gradual
    deterioration, insects, vermin, corrosion,
    rot, mildew, fungus, atmospheric
conditions, the action of light, any process
    of heating, drying, cleaning, decorating,
    alteration or repair, misuse, faulty
workmanship or design, the use of faulty
    materials, or breakdown
    • caused by chewing, scratching, tearing or
    fouling by domestic pets.
