    anyone got a scooby what's going on?

    Agreed. I'm too long in the tooth now to decipher anything but straight forward groups of European qualifiers, with the possibility of an inter-group play-off between runner-ups at the end, followed by the final tournament proper in a host country (dual-hosts begrudgingly accepted) using an initial round-robin group stage, followed by several knock-out rounds until we have a winner. :D

    This new format = :confused:

    Well it was fun for about 2mins. :rolleyes:

    Even with Giggs in charge, I wouldnt fancy playing Wales, not with O'Neill in charge anyway.

    In terms of ability I'd say Russia are the only ones you would really want to avoid, wouldn't fancy playing away to Turkey or going back to Denmark again so soon. Slovakia and Czech Republic would be the draw I would like.

    Really? I thought they were by a distance the worst team at Euro 2016. Added to that, they haven’t played competitively since the Confed Cup. Have they got much better? Do they still play with the Berezutski twins in defence?

    Denmark are the only team that would concern me after what happened in November. I’d fancy our chances against any of the other teams.

    Is there any scenario here that all 3 teams won't get at least a play-off to make the finals? So many teams can get through that I'm struggling to see how anyone from leagues A & B won't end up either qualified or in play-offs.

    As for Wales, I'm sure Seamus Coleman will be delighted to be back on the pitch with yer man again so soon.

    The main Euro 2020 draw will see 10 groups with the teams 1st & 2nd going to Euro 2020.

    Plays offs will be made up of 16 teams from the Nations League in a knock out format

    Starting with the 4 group winners.

    If any of the 4 group winners have already qualified then they are replaced by a team from the same league.

    However if say League A only has 2 teams in the play offs then they will promote 2 teams from League B but not the group winners to play in the play offs.

    Group Winners in each league will not play in playoffs in league above them

    Any idea what would happen in this scenario:

    Ireland finish 2nd in the group behind Denmark. Wales come 3rd.

    Denmark then qualify in the Euro Qualifiers by coming second in their group. We, however don't finish in the top 2 in our group. Nor do Wales.

    So in this scenario we'd get Denmark's play-off spot.

    However, what happens if they need some teams to play in the Division A play-offs due to the fact that 10 of the 12 have qualified via their qualification groups.

    In that scenario is it

    (1) We'd end up in the Division A play-offs and some team ranked beneath us in Division B overall gets Denmark's play-off spot

    or

    (2) We'd take Denmark's play-off spot in Division B and the next team beneath us would have to play in the Division A play-off

    One would think that it should be (2) but the wording almost makes it sound like it would be (1)

    From what I gather it's scenario 2, so we would still be in the B league playoffs and a team below us would be bumped up to the A league playoffs.

    been a follower of international football for years - but sometimes in life less is more - over-saturation of football has devalued the interest for me - used to love international football, but really struggle to enjoy it these days - added to the fact of a few more years of MON conservative boring football. Club football remains king.

    I like the idea of this league, it means an end to terrible friendly games against Oman and the likes, infront of barely 10k at the Aviva.

    Basically after this and the main qualification part. The top ranked teams in each league will move onto the play offs.

    If a League can't get 4 teams to be in the play offs then it will pull teams from the league below. These teams will not be from the top from teams from that league.

    Teams will then be ranked 1-4 for each league with those ranked 1 playing their playoff semi final at home to the team ranked 4 and 2 will host 3.

    A draw will then be made to see who host the final between the two winning semi final teams

    There are six matchdays for the UEFA Nations League in September, October and November and we will play on four of those dates, meaning that we won't play on two of those matchdays, freeing us up for friendlies if they want to face Oman again:)

    UEFA have 12 tie-breaking criteria according to their rules:
    1. Higher number of points obtained in the matches played among the teams in question;
    2. Superior goal difference in matches played among the teams in question;
    3. Higher number of goals scored in the matches played among the teams in question;
    4. Higher number of goals scored away from home in the matches played among the teams in question;
    5. If, after having applied criteria 1 to 4, teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams in question to determine their final rankings.[note 1] If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6 to 10 apply;
    6. Superior goal difference in all group matches;
    7. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
    8. Higher number of away goals scored in all group matches;
    9. Higher number of wins in all group matches;
    10. Higher number of away wins in all group matches;
    11. Fair play conduct in all group matches (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card as a consequence of two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by a direct red card);
    12. Position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system

    Usual tiebreakers like H2H, GD etc. But assuming say every game in the group has finished 1-1 then these splitters will do it.

    Fair play conduct in all group matches (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card as a consequence of two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by a direct red card);

    Position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system.

    Ok
    ===========================================
    League A
    4 group winners will contest a semi final / final next summer.
    4 teams in the bottom of each group demoted league B

    ============================================
    League B
    4 group winners promoted to league A
    4 bottom place teams in each group demoted to league C

    ============================================
    League C
    4 group winners promoted to league B
    4 bottom place teams demoted to league D

    ============================================
    League D
    4 group winners promoted to league C

    ============================================
    Main Qualification happens 10 groups winners and runners up go to Euro 2020

    ============================================
    Playoffs
    League A
    4 group winners are most likely to have already qualified
    Look at what teams have not qualified then make up playoffs from them
    If there are not 4 teams then look to league B.

    League B
    4 groups winners will be in the play offs unless they have already qualified.
    Here it will use a ranking system to determine the next best team to fill in the play offs.
    The top ranked teams will be in the league B playoffs.
    If a team is then needed to complete in league A playoffs it will be taken from the list of teams left after league B playoffs are fixed.

    So basically for each league the 4 best ranked teams not already qualified are in the play offs.

    If a higher league does not have 4 teams for the play offs it will draw teams from the league lower who are not in their league play offs

    So say Ireland are ranked 5th, they will be moved up to league A playoffs if all the teams ranked 1-4 are in league B playoffs.

    If any team ranked 1-4 qualify then Ireland would be in the league B play offs and the next ranked team would move into league A play offs.

    Didnt see the fair play aspect
    Im sure it wont come to that but we've all ready drawn 0-0 with both and the hiding we got from the Danes Id imagine O Neil playing very defensive against them again

    I really cant be bothered trying to figure out the details on this tournament. In my head I will be treating them like friendlies which will have a familiar theme music or logo on the side of the pitch.

    Since these are intrinsically linked. (They'll probably draw the Nations league finals at the same time.)

    Sky Sports Mix.

    Also, you want it free but it doesn't suit if it's on Virgin Media 3? You don't ask much do you?

    VM 1,2 and 3 in Ireland are the Old TV3 channels and can be picked up with an aerial and saorview box

    the Ireland match isn't on any of the VM channels - it's on SS Main Event and S4C.

    S4C is no longer on the Sky platform in Ireland (because of sports rights issues) but I think you can still tune it in via "other channels"

    If you have Saorview though, you can't watch the Ireland match.

    I've tried reading through this and understanding the permutations to qualify for Euro's.

    The teams who finish top of their groups are at least into a playoff for the Euros right?

    How do they plan on ranking the teams after the whole process is over for the playoffs - FIFA rankings, or do those in leagues above get ranked ahead of teams in leagues below?

    I belieeeve, that the playoffs are all contested by teams in the same divisions. So the top 4 ranked A teams (that haven't qualified) play each other, 1 gets into the Euros. The top 4 ranked B teams (that haven't qualified) play each other and 1 of those gets into the Euros, and so on and so on, so one from each of A, B, C, and D divisions are guaranteed into the Euros.

    As for how those rankings are decided, it's by performance in the group stages rather than Fifa rankings.

    This video actually does a decent job explaining the stages;

    So even if the team that wins our group goes into the playoffs having not qualified for the Euros in the normal fashion, we could still get into the playoffs by being better than other 2nd best teams. So I guess this means there are no dead-rubbers, as you may need those points/goal difference to get you in.

    Your almost better to be in league D in the nations league as you might have an easy playoff path to the finals if you fail in the grp stage

    Its a pity Denmark will get here act together before the Oct games as we could finish 2nd on default in the nations league and hope Wales qualify directly in the qualifers if we fail to do so

    Yep, Scotland have Albainia and Israel, even they might find it difficult to feck up their chances of winning that Group.
