just thinking about the public service aspect. I would have to say that i think the service in the morning is quite worth it as an alternative to the commerical stations and rte's fm stations

I'd disagree, if RTE are as in bad a shape as they make out to be then the have no business in a Golden Oldies type station and it should be left up to commercial stations to fill that gap. Much like 2fm which I don't think should be subsidized either(although it was a cash cow at one stage)

they have every business in it as their varient of it will be without adds and fake banter which equates to the previous poster's point, that it would still have a ps remit.

RTÉ IMO should possibly sell of RTÉ2 and 2fm and its mix of digital stations, with the BAI providing the owners with clear remits for the extra digital stations. (Whole other argument).

RTÉ GOLD IMO should be a mix of music and old programmes, this happened on this day 20 years, 30 years ago .... 100 years. This would possible take from the non-stop music, but they are a public service broadcaster.

As I said before if RTÉ are to drop any of its channels or stations they will need to make a proposal to the Minister, its not just a case of them being allowed drop channels like they did with DAB. They are stuck with the services they currently run on Broadcast until they make a proposal.

If they do decide to drop make a proposal then the BAI should be told to issue new independent licenses to take over from those stations.

Unfortunately, that's not the reality. Here are some of the artists played on Lyric FM between 7 and 10 this very morning (according to rte.ie)

Jamie Cullum; Neil Diamond; Gallagher and Lyle; Ray Stevens; Luka Bloom; Sammy Davis Jnr; Mark Knopfler; Babby McFerrin; Matthews Southern Comfort; Val Doonican; Bobby Darin; Carmel McCreagh; Bing Crosby; Sean Keane; Al Jolson

I reckon that's more than half of today's playlist. This from RTE's Classical and specialist music service!

A lot of RTE's music radio offering is a hot mess. It seems to me there is little justification for a staffed online Gold music service in these circumstances. There may be a justification for a cheaper, automated version.

The commercial sector isn't showing much interest in playing a varied mix of music over the last 60 years. Looking at national and quasi-national stations, Today FM is effectively a youth station now and even Classic Hits is mostly restricted to 1980-2009. RTE Gold fills that void for a lot of people.

Rather than suggesting getting rid of Gold, I'd be arguing that these artists shouldn't be played on Lyric at all. If Gold was more widely available I'd even suggest moving Marty Whelan to it. I'm not that interested in an automated playlist service though, because it's not much better than Spotify. I like hearing someone on the other end.

Its my first time hearing a news bulletin on RTE Gold at 9am this morning, got an update on covid etc. could this be the start of having it like a fm channel.

A little off topic, wouldn't you think RTE would swap around RnaG and Lyric fm on the FM band, so its like the Sky and Saorview platforms.

this is my point re public service remit - no waffle no 100 songs on autoplay with the same sounding Dj's like most of the commerical stations(and 2fm).. I would consider that 2fm if any of the stations should be the first to close given the availability of commerical stations that play the same remit(spin, beat, iradio etc). There is no way you will get a dj on a commercial station playing what rick does for 3 hours in prime morning without commericals.

I think that was Will just reading out the news for 30 seconds rather than an actual journalist. havent heard it before though..

If it's Will Leahy reading our the news headlines at the top of the hour, well that's part of the normal breakfast show format as this has been the norm since he started breakfast on RTE Gold.

Will usually just reads the headlines but this morning there were audio clips to go with the stories. It felt more bulletin like than normal, enough to make me notice it.

Just wondering, have the DAB signal been switched off today, I have not heard any news article of any kind about it, sad that RTE did nothing to advertise, promote or push the format, but its gone now I think and we'll have to forget about it.

I notice over the past few weeks, RTE Radio 1 News at 1am and then the final hour of Late Date cuts into RTE Gold at 1am (right now). This is one hour before the usual RTE R1/ Gold through the night simulcast at 2am.
But is this 1am 'simulcast' supposed to happen?

Wouldn't at all be surprised if it has something to do with daylight savings time as RTE Gold is so automated that they could have made an error in programming the station and haven't copped it yet!

enjoyed it too. bought myself one of those fm transmitters things for the car in argos for 18euro that works through the phone. Its like going back to the old days of the cassette model for those of you"young" enough to remember having to to that!

I really like the Saturday 5pm slot "From ABC to XTC" focusing on new wave and post punk. Lots of tracks rarely heard and interesting versions of more well known tunes e.g. finishing now with a live vesion of Talking Heads Burning Down the House.

Agreed, I would like to see them extend that show to 2 hours and have it run to 7pm but personally would prefer to have it go out on a Sunday and have The Golden Years run for 2 hours on Saturday 5-7pm. I think 1 hour is quite short for both shows. I would also prefer to see Mickey Mac back to the old slot on Saturday playing those classic dance tracks. I think it was 3-5pm or 4-6pm?
That's. what I would do if I were Aidan Leonard or whoever is actually in charge of programming the station.
