And if a gust toppled a double decker noone would blame them?

They have effectively imprisoned workers in Dublin City centre

Where was this announcement from Leo? Newstalk had no mention of it.

Windy alright in Cork city. Not constant thought, comes and goes. Was on the phone to my Mother in Kerry she says it's only really starting to get bad now. She has to drive home from work at 11.30am..

    Why ?

They brought everyone who relied on public transport to work and have now cancelled service until at least 7. Most likely they wont resume service. Shouldn't have been running at all today

This is an extremely rare and serious national weather event with potentially very damaging and even life-threatening consequences.

In most other places (especially as this doesn't happen here for the most part) a state of emergency would have been declared, a pre-arranged plan implemented, and clear instructions and guidance issued by Government (rather than leaving Met Eireann practically pleading for people to take it seriously!)

You think that's too much to expect? We already know our current Taoiseach isn't media shy, yet on this occasion he's vanished like his predecessor did in times of crisis (or scandal)

Don't travel and go out. How much clearer do you want it? Do you need a personal call from Leo to get it through to you? Because that's what it sounds like...

Seems like the storm is about 2 hours behind what was predicted.

Any reports yet of it actually hitting land in Ireland.

Weather alerts always take effect a few hours before the actual event is due to happen, it's to make sure people have a chance to get home because most people will leave it to the last minute.

Has Ireland every experienced 170km+ gusts, on record anyway?

They clearly communicated that services would stop at 10.

He should have made it last night and advised corporate companies to tell staff to stay at home . I know two banks that brought staff in at 8 am and sent them home at 10 am .

    Curent TAF for Dublin airport:

    TAF EIDW 160500Z 1606/1706 10010KT 5000 BKN005
    BECMG 1606/1609 13015G25KT 9999 SCT025
    BECMG 1609/1611 16025G40KT
    BECMG 1611/1613 16030G50KT
    TEMPO 1613/1616 17035G55KT 5000 RA BKN014
    BECMG 1616/1618 21030G45KT
    TEMPO 1621/1623 23035G55KT
    BECMG 1700/1702 24025G35KT
    BECMG 1704/1706 24015G25KT

Should be starting to kick off in the Dublin region soon with gusts in the region of around 90 - 100 km/h at peak between 13:00 and 23:00

Whilst these are fairly high winds, I've recorded winds in this range around once a year here since i started recording, so nothing exceptional in Dublin seems likely though there will be some trees down and damage. Rainfalls amounts in Dublin are likely to be nothing special so no danger of flooding.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

Oh right yeah. Yeah this cancelling transport when people have travelled into an area makes no sense at all.

He's saying employers should consider today as "force majeure" leave and pay employees.

Leo not happy that Boxer is taking the limelight.

Leo asked about the private sector - talking crap about it being an evolving situation.
Asked whether they should have gone to work he said people were advised not to do any non-essential travel.
His recommendation now is for people to stay where they are - whether it's at home or in the workplace.

'eye' of the storm just coming onto the southwest coast now and strongest winds expected east of the center so we should start to see reports of stronger gusts in Cork, Tipp, Waterford, Wexford in the next few hours

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,915 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

The winds are really picking up now north of Cork City.

Force majeur leave, yeah right, I'd live to see the face of my employer when citing Leo's advice, they told us this morning not to come to work, and we won't get paid, no choice

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,689 ✭✭✭bur

Starting to gust here in Shannon.

Leo actually boasting about having not made a decision to coordinate before this morning
