I would say winds are about 90% as strong as the highest of the day time gusts. Definitely enough to bring down more branches and trees. - South Dublin

Wind is gusting to 49kts at DUB now, and max gust today was 56kts. Not far off it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,972 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

No it's definitely windier than any stage today!

When the wind was south Dublin was sheltered somewhat of course.

Well all the instruments say its not so i dont know what to tell ypu

nope, definitely stronger now. The trees are swaying faster and harder.

The literal instruments to measure this would disagree

Wind has picked up again here in Cavan just from different direction and we’re more exposed to it.

Its gusting 34 at dublin airport right now

Similarly its less than half what was being recorded by the dublin bay buoy earlier.

Direction may change perception of how windy it actually is

    What?

RTE put up a strange video of Johanna Donnelly preparing for broadcast, but they have rightly taken it down now!

A buoy in Dublin bay will accurately measure the wind at its exact location.

Well, I'm listening to ATC so I highly doubt they're lying. METAR for DUB gives 47kts at 22:30.

You realise your source isn't the most updated?

She is strange, what strange content was it? posing in a mirror?

And do the literal instruments agree with your claim that the wind now is only half the strength of earlier? Genuine question. Can't believe we had 80 knot gusts earlier while this is only 40s. It was over 60 at Casement a couple of hours ago and felt much worse than this afternoon.

People in the East feeling strong winds are correct according to this

This is bad here now, really strong gusts. It's not perception! Should ease soon though.

Really blowing hard in Meath now....are we experiencing a sting jet in the tail of this storm??Definitely not over just yet

Yes its also by far the most exposed part of the area, dublin airport is reporting the same reduced wind speed again in an incredibly exposed area, if you want to find any other instruments around dublin that have been recording and showing their results you will find the same lower reporting

Agree with this. The actions of local farmers is always helpful, especially when bringing their machinery out to help clear roads. But free training courses on the use of cutting equipment would be beneficial. These farmers won't stop what they do - and fair play to them. But the Local Authorities / Dept Agri could help out by providing general training on the use of chainsaws etc. Nothing mandatory, but highly advisable.

It would be like the knapsack sprayer cert. 150 euro and 2 days "training" for a FETAC level 5 cert, and then be told your "qualification" only lasts 3 years. Any other FETAC award you have permanently.
Turn into a "jobs for the boys" scheme. You would literally be better watching some of the excellent tutorials on YouTube.
And most importantly, buy (and use)good quality chainsaw trousers or chaps.

Same here (I'm only about 1km away from Casement, at the very south of the Lucan area, no houses south / south west of mine!)

With the southerly winds earlier, most of the Dublin area was sheltered by the Dublin / Wicklow mountains. With the wind turned to the usual south west now, there is no shelter. Casement usually has the highest wind speed recordings in the Dublin area

"The strength of the wind, when coming from a south-westerly direction, is stronger than in other areas near Dublin because of the location of this station in relation to the Dublin Mountains."

I think it could be all the places that weren't too bad earlier, are getting more of a wallop now, because the wind has changed direction.

Power restored near Mountmellick and gone again just now. Has been equally as windy as earlier today. But neither event as windy as February 14

They are exposed so would feel every gust; perhaps the location of my dwelling means the direction of the wind didn't hit us hard earlier which means we are now not exposed so my dwelling is feeling a stronger wind than earlier.

All calm in Cork City. Safely back from a pint.

    Stay safe everyone.

Dublin bay buoy and dublin airport both showing half the strength of wind that was around at 3-4pm.

Is it really windier or are peoples perceptions completely different at night?
Seems to have picked up. Some aircraft in the hold at Dublin airport seeing if things will ease down. One diverting to Shannon. Plus a couple of new outages in the Dublin area.

Very possible but the overall wind is not anything as strong as it was is the point im trying to make

Up here in North of donegal it really is surprisingly calm.

Ok so it's windy but just like any other normal windy day.

It looks like we got lucky for once up here, and have the weakest winds of the day.

Weird comment, but is there a general hum in the air in West Dublin? It sounds like the road sweeper truck is a little in the distance. Weird noise.

Technically you're not wrong, but difference is negligible. Currently gusting to 50kts at Dublin Airport, and aircraft diverting to Shannon.

The wind now here outside Castlebar is worse than at any point in the last 24 hours
