I'm interested to see will work open here in Cork tomorrow. Getting in ain't going to be an issue if it hits at 10/11 but that even rules out half day here. Might as well ride it out in an office block at that point than trying to get home in the storm. A lot of people coming from rural areas so really hoping they close for them.

Can't understand why businesses aren't forced to close by the authorities.

They can not be opening a school in Cobh tomorrow - surely...utterly dangerous

That's incredible, the school should be closed! It's also a primary school, not like the students of it will miss much!

Are they for real? They are literally at the front line of what could be the worst storm to hit Ireland in a long time.

Just pure stupidity of the staff to go with that decision.

Call centre too so people are hardly going to be ringing in

Just wondering why so many people in Limerick are nervous compared to everywhere else? Are the buildings there made from cardboard :)
Just take precautions and watch out for flying debris and stay indoors if possible.

Because we got caught out with Darwin. No red alert until the middle of the storm, and schools closing randomly at the height of it, parents trying to cross a city with many arterial routes blocked by fallen trees. Roof ripped off the boat club in the Shannon and brick building work pulled down in two places in the city centre.

Madness, to even say watch for fallen trees and not realise the stupidity of their decision...unreal

Any parent with a single cell between their ears would just keep their kids at home for the day.
Baffles me the lack of concern by the school.

Maybe it is a joke - hopefully.

Insane, and they're using a well out of date wind-speed probability chart too.

Please note that it's thd BOM not the staff who decide - ordinary staff have no say. And at that it is most likely the management body who has biggest sway.

Posted this in the wrong (techincal) thread, so placing here instead under warning
met.ie appears to have just been updated with two additional counties.

    STATUS RED

Wind Warning for Wexford, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford

http://www.meteoalarm.eu/en_UK/0/0/IE-Ireland.html also have RED for ALL coasts including East, along the Irish Sea

That link actually shows October 15th and not the 16th

Just back from the local Pound (€1.50) Shop with my battery LED lights. The guy on the till said to me: "you must be bumping into things in the dark, are you?"

Me: "eh no, just preparing for the worst tomorrow"

    Him: "what's tomorrow?"

    Me: "eh, the storm"

    Him "what storm?"

I thought he was joking but no, he really had no idea about it.

Gaurentee they'll announce the school will be closed by the end of the day.

How long is this storm likely to last over Ireland. One day, Two ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,028 ✭✭✭H3llR4iser

Again, seems to me like a lot of people (majority?) are thinking "sure, it'll be a bit windy and rainy, what's the problem?" and don't understand the situation.

Why aren't the authorities stepping in it's a mystery...are they afraid school/businesses will ask for "compensation"? It's not like these storms happen every day, it's been 50 years...

The biggest concern should be around timing and transport - last time I checked, the worst of the weather is supposed to hit around 4/5pm, right while basically everyone is going to be outside and trying to get home...
