2 extra men. Pack the box and lump it in.

That was a penalty on Morata, he was clearly dragged back.

Maybe they're trying to screw up with VAR so badly that no one ever calls for it again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

    Refs had an absolute stinker.

2 stone walls penalties not given by VAR is a joke.

We're going to lose on penalties and I'm not even bothered at this stage TBH.

That morata incident could have been a dive and a penalty. Impossible to resolve really...

A hand on his shoulder and he goes diving like theres a pool under him.

Lots of boos ringing around the stadium at FT

Morata slightly pulled, but how you fall forward from that is bizarre. He should've been booked for his dive a few minutes before too

Because if he stays on his feet he gets nothing, despite being pulled back.

Referees encourage players to dive by not awarding penalties if they stay vertical.

Tempted to have a few quid on Chelsea winning the shootout.

Wonder if any Chelsea player will dive in the shoot out. ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

I don't think Morata's is a penalty, he puts his hand on him but that happens in middle of the pitch and nothing is given, it was barely a 'pull back at all. Morata falling like that hasn't helped him. The thing is theres quite the disparity between Pedro's dive and Morata's 'dive', in that theres zero contact and some minor contact. Not sure both are a booking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,907 ✭✭✭✭Kristopherus

That ref should get the same holidays as Pedro or Morata. Atrocius performance.

How come they aren't doing ABBA penalties?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Pedro's was a booking all day IMO.

    Then at least fall backwards!

If he’s pulled he doesn’t fall forward, never mind like his swan dive!

Thought the ref got every call bar the Morata dive right, wasn't a pen but wasn't a dive either. In saying that, Morata should just shut up and take the yellow.

Hope Pedro gets a two game ban for that dive. Completely blatant and if Niasse gets a ban retrospectively then Pedro should get the two game ban too.

So the answer is a big theatrical dive, get a yellow then abuse the ref and get another one?

Footballers need to learn the ref is the boss on the pitch . If they make a mistake , suck it up, get on with the game, get in your fancy car afterwards and go home to your mansion.

They didn't get anything from it so can't be banned

    Hate Luiz.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Thought the Willian one would be given after VAR, never thought the Morata one would.

there was contact...seen em given...gave the ref a decision to make
    ...none of that means anything.

Pleased to see the ref give a card for the abuse too, more refs should do that.

    Willian booking included?

Instead of the abba system they should have both teams taking penos at the same time using both goals :)

Chelsea through after beating Norwich, the ref and the VAR.

Never been so delighted to go through to the 4th round of such an inept performance from an official.

Meh, struggled to do anything for 210 minutes against lower division opposition while resorting to multiple players flinging themselves to the ground to try get penos after create fook all tbh .

Tbh, I think the only decision he got badly wrong was the Willian one.

Pedro’s was a blatant dive, and in my view so is Moratas. If he’s pulled back he wouldn’t fall forward like that. Only himself and the ref know what was said, but Morata seemed to accept the 2nd yellow.

Shouldn't have to rely on VAR to beat Norwich but when it's there and isn't used correctly what's the point of it?

Moratas never going to get a free or penalty again because he's a perceived diver. Costa got the same treatment from the refs so I'm used to it at this stage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,986 ✭✭✭Soups123

Agreed tow dives both worthy of cards and Pedro second an obvious second yellow. Not sure what VAR could have done more tonight

Two different players cheating in a game is bad form so good to see both culprits seeing red

I think thats fair game, you try cheat the system more than once it's naturally going to stick. Deal with the problem at source and you don't need VAR

    Delighted we didn't use var.

Genuine question, when wasn’t it used correctly?

The Willian one was reviewed. VAR felt the decision wasn’t an obvious error. You can disagree with the outcome, but that’s how the system is meant to work.

Willian was wrongly booked for diving. He was caught.

it was a peno and he shouldn't have been booked.

The ref was out to make a name for himself. He was basically a championship version of Mike Dean.

If those decisions had went against Norwich there would have been uproar across the board because their the underdogs.

The booking cannot be reviewed under VAR.

I thought he was clipped, but a number of others on various websites seem to think he was going down before contact. If the VAR felt that, he won’t over rule the ref.

If the ref gave a penalty, the VAR would have left that decision stand too, even if he felt Willian was going down before contact.

The VAR only overrules if there is a clear error. He obviously felt there was no clear error. You may disagree with that (with some justification) but it doesn’t mean VAR didn’t operate as it was supposed to.

If Chelsea put as much effort in the first game or to kill the game off as they did claiming penalties, they'd have won it comfortably. It was the most energy they had all game.

Fond memories as a Barcelona fan of Chelsea stomping around about penalties not given in a cup game.:)

VAR is going to be very unlikely to overturn on the basis there was 'contact'.

No. My view of it was that the leg was there, he saw it, flicked his foot against it, and dived. The referee it seems though something similar, and the VAR didn't correct it after reviewing it.

Diving for penalties looked to be a big part of Chelsea's game plan tonight. If this is the future of VAR, then I'm all for it. I'm of the view that penalties are too easy got anyway, for example the Hazard one v Arsenal recently. Some contact is allowed when going for the ball in the penalty area, and if the VAR helps that, good.

The first dive was a joke, really obvious. I'd almost be of the opinion that Chelsea should face a fine for cheating, on the basis that 3 players were booked for diving in the same game, which is something I've never seen before

In fairness to the Referee and his assistants, they did make the game very entertaining to watch.
