    Reminder: Seamanship Course at Skerries Sailing Club
    An Introduction to Seamanship - Intensive 10 Week Shore Based Course: A reminder that the winter course on seamanship will commence on Wednesday as below.There are a few places left.Ideal for anyone taking to the water in the spring.All welcome. No previous experience necessary.
    This is a 10-week shore based course, designed for all types of water users; sail, cruiser, fishing and power/jet ski. The course is comprehensive and will cover all the major aspects of seamanship and navigation. By course end, students will be able to take to sea in their craft of choice competently, with confidence and respect. No previous experience is necessary. Details of modules are as follows;
    *Boating terms and parts
    All the parts of boats and boating language will be covered and used during the course.
    - Tides
    Tidal streams and heights will be calculated. The use of the tides as a tool in passage making will be focused on by reference to almanacs, tidal atlases, and pilot data. Tidal predictions and the phases of the moon on tidal strength are covered over two modules.
    - Weather
    An analysis of North Atlantic depressions which dominate Irish weather will be undertaken. Students will be introduced to weather terms and forecasts. At the end of these two modules, students should be able to take down a forecast, analyze it before going to sea or under passage.
    - Navigation
    This is the core module of the course and students will be introduced to charts and passage plans. Recognition of chart symbols, cardinal marks, lighthouse and buoyage recognition will enable the student to interpret a chart. The components of course plotting and steering will be covered during this three-week module.
    *Rules of the Road
    This module will cover the priorities, rights of way and the rules at sea covered by the Rules of the Road or International Regulations for the Avoidance of Collisions at Sea. Light symbols and VHF radio protocols are covered in advance of use on the cruise.
    *Instruments
    This module covers marine instruments like depth, wind, GPS, VHF radio and logs. Students will learn their workings and how data can be used in an integrated way to assist passages.
    The course will commence on Wednesday 18th of October at 7.45 pm for 2 hours per module with a ten-minute coffee break. The venue is Skerries Sailing Club on the Harbour Road. Fee for the course is e75per person and e50 for Juniors (under 16s)
