From 4 or 5 years ago. Considered gas in every Facebook post for the best part of a year.

Meaning a person having a bit of spark/liveliness about them.

It is something I have only ever heard from older people (over 70). Unfortunately it was my grandparent who I first heard it from, and I quickly changed the subject. And subsequently heard Vincent Browne on TV3 say it, which I found absolutely hilarious. And then from working around older people.

It was without doubt a common turn of phrase back in the day. But now it has a very different exact meaning.

My parents' generation had some wonderful expressions which you hear only rarely now...

"A bit of a want..." (Referring to an unspecified mild learning disability - or just someone who makes weird choices or decisions, often followed by "...God love him.")
"A bit of a consequence" (describing someone who is a full of themselves)
"Like a snot on a bramble" (describing a precarious position.)
