So you really can't answer that one then!
I'm no lover of the RCC as an institution but there are lot of good men and women within it and I won't brand them all with the same accusation

And how many of these "good men and women" have demanded that toerags who assisted child rapists face criminal charges?

The good men and women have been silenced
Even the current Pope has refused to removing the gag on Fr Brian Darcy and others

What magic tricks will he do on stage?

Water into wine for starters, then he'll transform most of the audience into priests and nuns and set them about reclaiming Ireland for the Holy See.

The usual trick performed every Saturday evening and Sunday morning at Mass, turning bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ

I can't believe there are actually people who would still turn out for a Pope - at least people under 70. I'm astounded that are actually 60 people on this thread who have voted that they would go to see him. Someone tell me WHY? Just why?

You don't think censorship has returned re people we disagree with, as in George Hook, Donal Óg Cusack daring to give a character reference for a person convicted of serious crimes ("audi alteram partem") and being pressurised to back off, the chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Abortion refusing to allow the showing of an abortion video, ("I've already seen it,") while a member claims that when he speaks there his contributions are often orchestrated by sniggers, or the general intolerance of opposing viewpoints, nowhere more apparent than in boards.ie, where so many people trot out the same old clichéd stuff week after week?
Yes, we had lots of censorship long ago, mostly supported by the RC Church. It's back, this time mostly at the behest of people who mistakenly describe themselves as liberals. And with it brainwashing has returned. Mention Hitler here and some kneejerk will shout "Godwin." In one instance a poster was castigated by an A&A gob****e for saying something like "God willing" or "thank God." When Lourdes was flooded a few years ago, resulting in the drowning of an old lady, there was gloating on an A&A thread. One can understand that there are posters just out of restrictive schools or just out of short pants who want to kick the traces. The saddest part is that I have never known any such excess to be admonished by an A&A mod or any A&A poster old enough to know better.

It’s natural to expect a reactionary mood in a country that has been repressed by the Catholic Church for generations. It would be odd if that wasn’t the case. After all, it is barely over 2 decades since the abuse scandals of the Church broke in the media and people are, justifiably, still very angry.

This will all die down and level off eventually but as the decline of the Church is so recent and indeed is ongoing, won’t happen for a generation or two yet.

You mean we could have to endure the gob****es for two generations? Think of the damage they could do. They could be so much worse than what has preceded them.

You do realise, don't you, that the dominance of the Church and it's acceptance by the people was also a reaction?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,400 ✭✭✭lukesmom

Yes I would go. I don't know who with though. Husband definitely would have no interest. My parents wouldn't be able for the crowds. None of my friends go to mass. I'd have to go alone.

Of course. Most changes to countries, either social or economic, tend to be reactionary. That’s how history works. I just call it as I see it, that doesn’t mean I condone it or agree with it.

In fact I also think that so-called “liberal” groupthink is shouting down and shutting down other valid voices and that we may well be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Just look at the reactions on here in boards when posters question an unbridled immigration policy and the possible long-term consequences of that. There is a need for both sides of a debate to be heard, not for one side to try to stifle and suppress the other. That’s not healthy.

But the general mood in Ireland is not pro-Church, that’s for sure.

I'd have no problem with the 60's 70's age bracket attending because a huge cohort of those still have a very real faith but if it's packed to the rafters with younger, smartphone toting people, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised either. We're a country of event junkies. Thousands would show up to the opening of a packet of crisps if it was on in Croke Park and it gave them a chance to brag about it on facebook. This is no different.

He should be going to Armagh given that it is the capital of the Irish Catholic church but of course it is not touristy enough for any man or Pope is it? Did you hear auld Kenny saying that he would "support the Pope going north of the border if he wanted to" that's nice of him given that Armagh is the first place he should really be going regardless of Kennys support.

Sit down there for a minute and take a deep breath. I need to break something to you. Now, please don't panic. But
unfortunately the world does not actually revolve around you. And when a person creates a thread, they might not be taking full account of your personal preferences and desires when writing that OP. I know that it can be tough to hear, especially for an atheist, but sometimes, and I mean just sometimes, people don't give a sh1te.

Why go to be deceived by the biggest false church in the whole World.

Many would say the Catholic Church is deeply Satanic.

Look at all these symbols mocking Jesus Christ, upside down crosses, devil horns on the previous Pope etc.
Anyone following these Satanists are so deceived it's almost unbelievable. The symbolism mocking Christ they have is endless. Upside down crosses, bent crosses of Christ etc.

Alex Jones never ever mention the Jesuits. Jesuits pull the strings of the Roman Catholic Church. Alex Jones is a shill of the highest order.

    You think upside down crosses
is normal?. It mocks God and lord almighty himself Jesus Christ. These peoples symbology is incredibly anti Christian.
If you cant see that Stevie Wonder sees more than you.

King of Kings Jesus saves man. These people are hustlers of the worst kind. How many times have you ever seen someone repent in a Catholic church?. Never. The one thing God asks us to do to save our souls!.
Sad to see so many openly mock lord and saviour in Catholic Church out of a

I think he comes across as a good man, but I actually feel sorry for these old men who have devoted their lives to this dogma which is based on having faith in mere stories. It's sad really. I still think it would be packed, as there are plenty of people who believe in it all in Ireland, especially outside of Dublin. I met a girl in her 30s from Cavan a while ago who went to mass sometimes, I couldn't believe it.

The bent cross is actually more representative of how the cross would have looked.
Not likely to be a well crafted carpentry piece, and more likely to be some crude logs lashed together. He has it spot on.
Edit: You can even see the lashings in the thing....

Just as all the modern day depictions of Jesus would have you believe he was a blond white dude, he most likely looked something like this, according to most anthropologists:
    https://www.newstatesman.com/sites/default/files/styles/nodeimage/public/blogs_2015/12/jesus_reconstruction.jpg?itok=S1LqXHGx
Unless you actually believe he was blond, in which case you're worshipping an albino.

There is no harm to be had in accurately depicting something.
