The video I've seen of it I still can't figure out how they went wrong. They start going up a motorway slip road and then turn around, but then the video shows them sneaking through a gap in a fence to get back on course.

Unless they rejoin the course exactly where they left it then they would be DQ'ed and that point that they show in the video doesn't show any other runners going past on the correct course.
