Is it worth paying for them? How much do the cost per year? I'm building a hobby website, its non profit and want it to generate abit of public interest.

    Thanks

Google ads cost as much as you are prepared to spend.
The search ads work if you have a product or service to sell but imo not the best for general promotion
Ads on networks might give some exposure but could still be expensive.

My suggestion would be to do promotion yourself, on social media, forums on your topic, etc.

Join all the online groups related to your hobby that you can find, and be an active member. DO NOT spew your website name all over or you will get blocked pretty quickly and not get any followers.

Write and build up an archive of articles on your hobby website, then if a question is asked in a forum you can refer to the relevant post on your site, or if you don't have that article, write it, and then refer to it.
In any post you do on other websites or social media always include a link back to your site, even if only in your signature.
Creating a library of articles on your hobby site, that you can link to from other websites, will build up a group of interested followers much more effectively than paid adverts

That makes sense, thanks for that.
