The Romanian referee had to be escorted off the pitch at the end

If that’s what the Spanish will bring to rugby they can fùck off.

Penalty count was 24-3 against them apparently.

Don’t care. Rugby has certain values and they don’t come from soccer. Call it snobbery but our game should not be about refs at risk of physical harm.

    Absolutely.

    On a completely different point:
Who thought appointing a Romanian ref was a good idea?

Agree. But there also needs to be some responsibility taken by WR and how refs are appointed.

    Rugby Europe did the appointment

The scenes were ugly and have no place. But I'm reluctant to be too harsh on them. They'll be punished and deservedly but their life dreams just collapsed in front of their eyes.

How on earth a Romanian official was allowed to referee the game is beyond me.

Saw on Twitter. The ref and both AR's Romanian and were appointed by a Romanian for this fixture.

No evidence to suggest impropriety however the optics are poor.

The head of Rugby Europe is Romanian apparently

I have more time for the Spanish players reaction than the corruption on display by others. That was the most disgusting refereeing performance I have ever seen.

I agree it’s useless to put a Romanian ref in charge of a game where Spain losing puts Romania through. You can never trust the old eastern bloc.

On a side note, it’s weird that Canada and Samoa have yet to qualify.

Canada Rugby clearly agree with you, they sacked Anscombe for that reason!

Think i saw that Spain now play a two legged playoff with Samoa which you'd assume Samoa will cruise through, especially now half the Spanish will probably be banned

Loser goes into a group situation for one more spot with Canada and a bunch of other teams who won't go through. Canada have been awful in recent times

Did you watch it, can you give any more detail?

Yeah saw it. Penalty count by the end was 22/3-3 against Spain by the end. Gave a yellow card to a Spanish bloke for apparently nothing yet Belgium didn't receive anything for the most deliberate knock on you will ever see. Was calling back Spanish mauls and scrums that at best show he didn't know the rules and at worst reveal a far more troublesome issue.

Spain were ****e but couldn't blink for fear of a penalty (Belgium kicked 6 to win 18-10)

Final whistle blew and Belgium are delighted with themselves and started celebrating a bit too passionately. This seemed to further wind the already furious Spanish players up and a group of them started trying to get to the referee before coaches etc pulled them away. I genuinely thought that the Spanish number 6 I think it was, was going to smack him or one of the touch judges such was the speed he chased them at

Thanks. Obviously respect for the ref is fundamental to the sport but everything I've read about this sounds scandalous.

Somebody made a video of the penalty count and what he ignored from Belgium. This was a total stitch up sadly. Really bad look for rugby given how important the game was

The first half looks alright, but my God that second half is borderline farcical.
The Spanish shouldn't have reacted the the way they did but if a ref put in a performance like that in the six nations or similar there would be a media sh*t storm.

Some of that looks pretty poor alright.

I'm fairly loathe to question the professionalism of a ref but well...

Given the furore over the AR2 for the Irish match I think the optics on this are a lot worse.

Pichot has tweeted that he has over 200 messages about it when he arrived in Argentina and has promised to look at the match.

That's one of the most infuriating things I've seen. The guy is a cheat, what an absolute disgrace. The match should be replayed. That ref shouldn't be allowed near a Fr. Godfrey Cup match.

I've gone all KB warrior and fired off my displeasure to WR and to AP. The last thing rugby needs is to go all FIFA. If they want to bring up the next set of countries (Spain, Germany, Romania, Portugal etc) then this sort of carry on needs to be stamped out. It's the kind of thing that can set the game back a good bit.

Reminds me of an under 13s schools match where the home team provides the 'ref'. And even then that's being a bit unfair to said ref. :(

Regardless of the ref himself, and looking at the vid, some of his decisions were actually correct, but how on earth they allow this choice of refs.

Imagine let's say Ire vs Wales, where an Irish loss would give Scotland a 1/4 final vs Fiji and an Irish win would mean Scotland play NZ. And they appoint an all Scottish reffing panel. And Ireland lose (ok, it's hypothetical because Ireland don't lose any more, but still).

Some were, many (many) weren't, but his non-decisions were the worst part.

Yeah the guy who tackles round the neck then flops all over the ball...

As I said the ref might just be crap and not biased, but the choice of romanian officials for this game is just amateur.

I don't know how you can just be crap and arrive at a 24-3 penalty count or whatever it was. The chances of you being exclusively crap for one team must be infinitesimal. I've felt very frustrated at refs in the past but this is the first time I believe we're watching blatant cheating.

After an appeal by spain last month was rejected by a Romanian administrator

Well Barnes gave a very lopsided PK in 2007 for NZ vs Fra, but I never ever considered him to be cheating or biased, even if I felt more than a bit flat after the game. He's actually an excellent ref these days.

All we need now is to find out the ref is wearing a new gold watch...
