Finding utility lines

I'm about to dig a large number of holes for hedging. I'd rather not take out the electricity and phone while I'm at it. I've a reasonable idea where both run, from the location of the electric meter and where the phone line comes into the house. I'd like to have a precise location though - what's the best way to find the lines?

Ring the ESB and ask them...while the cables are supposed to be well buried, its better safe than frazzled.

Local hire place may have a thing that will detect electricity lines, dunno about phone lines tho.

You can hire out a detector. It beeps when you're near/over cables. Simple.

Is it the supply coming in to your house your worried about hitting ? If so you could dig away carefully with a shovel. The supply to your house will be in a duct so unless your going thrashing about with a mini digger you would be fine.
