Multiclassing is fairly simple. You can split your XP and spend it on another class's progression ladder.

The limit is that you can be no more than three classes. Also Hit Die are halved. The AEC has the example of Thief/Fighter. If the character goes up a level in thief, they only get 1d4/2 extra health.

Details are on p.24 of the AEC, but there really isn't much else.

    Note the forbidden combinations:
    Dwarf/Fighter, Halfling/Fighter, Elf/any class, Paladin/any class, Monk/any class

Technical note: Here Dwarf/Fighter means you can't combine the Dwarf racial class with the Fighter class. However Race: Dwarf, Class: Fighter is allowed.

I'm going to make a post now about the final class and race layouts.

Do you round the halfed hit die up or down?
Is this retroactively applied to previous rolls?

For the hybridised among us (Necro and myself) does our current state count as one class or two?

If you choose say Magic User / cleric, do you get 2 sets of spells a day? Do you need to spend 2 hours a day learning (or 16 hours asleep!?)

Two laddie. I need 1.5 times the XP of a normal dwarf to level up after level 6.... not sure if that affects you or not

Down, but the .5 is "stored" as it may combined with a later .5

    No.

Only eight hours sleep, as this is the time for both your internal magical stores to recharge (Magic-User) and a requirement of the gods (Cleric).

Two hours to prepare. One hour to pray and another to memorise spells.

Answer to your other question will be in the detailed post on classes and races.

No idea. I suspect finding out will involve Othegre being paralysed, imminent death and then an explosion. Just a hunch :)

Magic user / assassin. Right up my current characters street. Let me be an alchemist too and I'll poison the World - or whatever remains of it after I let it burn with magical apocryphal 'splosions.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Just to note, when I say "Race" I'm referring to a mechanical concept from the AEC. BandyLegs is of course a Dwarf, but he has no race mechanically, just the Dwarf Class. For this reason I've given "None" as a race below. In brackets next to each class are the races who can take it. It seems like a massive list, but they're all from Labyrinth Lord officially, except for Gold Dragon that I took from a Magazine and Vampire that comes a class popular at conventions.

    Races:
    None**
    Human
    Dwarf
    Elf
    Halfling
    Gnome
    Half-Orc
    Half-Elf
    Ancient Elf**
    Ancient Human
    Deep Dwarf
    Hobbit
    Vampire**

*None must start with one of the following classes: Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Dragon.
**These races have to multiclass, they don't have the choice. Vampire has Blood Magic User for free when multiclassing.

    Classes:
Assassin (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Vampire, None)
Cleric (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Vampire, None)
    Druid (Human, None)
Fighter (Human, Dwarf, Halfling, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, None)
    Illusionist (Human, Gnome, None)
    Magic-User (Human, Elf, Half-Elf, None)
    Monk (Human, None)
    Paladin (Human, None)
    Ranger (Human, Half-Elf, None)
Thief (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Halfling, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, None)
    Dwarf (None)
    Dwarven Cleric (None)
    Elf (None)
    Halfling (None)
    Samurai (Human, None)
    Ninja (Human, None)
    Gold Dragon (None)
Fighting Man (Ancient Human, Ancient Elf, Deep Dwarf, Hobbit)
User of the Old Magic (Ancient Human, Ancient Elf)
Cleric of the forgotten gods (Ancient Human)
    Blood Magic User (Vampire)

    Multiclassing restrictions:
The following class combinations are not allowed.

    Dwarf/Fighter, Halfling/Fighter, Elf/any class, Paladin/any class, Monk/any class

    Your state is:
    Race: Vampire
Class: (Multiclassing) Blood Magic User, Cleric

    BandyLegs is:
    Race: None
    Class: Dwarven Cleric

When multi-classing, can you lvl up which ever class you wish, or does your original class stay on hold until new class catches up?

Can I just be of dwarven race then :P Probably not a good idea picking Elf or Halfling Dwarven Cleric...

    OOOOHHHHH

DRAGON Dwarven Cleric. Make it happen :D

You are race 'none' , the only race that can be a dwarven cleric!

'None' can multi-class dwarven cleric and golden dragon ;)

That would explain Citras interest in you. Because any dragons in our party as PCs are here kids...

It also means you should be able to swing us a free train ride

Once you multiclass, I award two (or three) sets of XP to your character, one for each class.

I'll have a short post soon comparing:

    Race: None
    Class: Dwarven Cleric

    and

    Race: Dwarf
    Class: Cleric

    Just out of interest.

Wait, I'm already a blood magic user? Damn, I was going to multiclass as a blood magic user...

Ok, you need to pm me my actual XP because I've been levelling up as a cleric

(Well, not "need". I'd appreciate it if you would, as I've been cheating for months!)

It's the class giving you your Vampiric powers.

Vampire is an unusual race. You have several weaknesses, but in return you multiclass for free.

The race 'none' can multi-class DC + GD

Dragon Dwarven Cleric it is!! Bandylegs is the spawn of a dwarf and a dragon... this explains so much!!!

Ah, indeed. Note added. There was actually an article about this in one of the 80s issues of Dragon magazine, i.e. can 'None' multiclass

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 51,551 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

You mean I could actually become a Dragon Dwarven Cleric??

    O. M. G.

    My dreams are coming true!!

Note added to above post saying none cannot multi class.. :(
Need to remember that if choosing golden dragon for reroll.

    (None, Dwarven Cleric) vs (Dwarf,Cleric):

    1. (None, Dwarven Cleric) goes up to Level 20, (Dwarf,Cleric) goes to Level 8

    2. (None, Dwarven Cleric) has better saving throws

    3. (Dwarf,Cleric) can multiclass, as the Dwarf race can

    4. (Dwarf,Cleric) has access to destructive spells

    5. (Dwarf,Cleric) levels at the rate of Cleric. (None, Dwarven Cleric) levels at the rate of 1.5 x (None, Dwarf). So (None, Dwarven Cleric) is about twice as slow at leveling.
