How to estimate costs of house extension? => Help needed

We consider building an extension, but are unsure about the total costs. Are there any ways of getting an idea how much we'll be looking at other than by getting estimations from various builders? We don't have any experience and don't want to waste anyone's time while making up our minds on the size and style. Any advice…

Get drawings drawn up and then get 3 quotes to compare. Making sure all quotes are like for like.

Sometimes you have to outlay a small amount (drawings in this case) in order to work out of its possible or not.
