As Macs are pretty much unknown territory I'm turning to the experts for advice here. Buying the misses a new Mac to replace her current PC Laptop that's dying (again). Main use is surfing (300+ tabs in Firefox, not joking!), watching a movie/youtube video, surfing, skype etc. so no heavy duties like programming, games etc.

Previous PC laptops have died due to overheating usually (fans replaced on all of them at least once with complete cleaning at the time etc.) which is why the new Macbook that's fanless looks very interesting; on the other hand the Mac book Pro comes with a bigger screen at basically the same price. I'm taking her to the local Apple store to give her a chance to try both "hands on" so to speak but my knowledge of the technical back end is limited inc. look outs, if insurance is worth it (for a laptop I could open and fix most things myself in my sleep basically) etc. due to the cost.

I'm setting up a NAS to sort out any storage issues due to the SSD on them but once again no clue if I should go for the 16GB model over the 8GB model on memory (no idea how much the OS will suck up etc.).

Any advice is appreciated inc. things I've missed in my ignorance :)

For many years I used a PC. I too found that problems wi.th it.
Changed to Apple have had no problems in the last 15 years. Have now had 3.

Little more expensive than a PC. It all depends on what you are using the Mac for.

You can speak to Apple beforehand.

If not buy the highest spec Apple one can afford.

My MBP , have updated to SSD and it increase and it will be good for another few years.

For what you're going to be using it for, the Macbook will be fine, it isn't quite as powerful machine as the Macbook Pro, but it should still do everything you need, and for a long time.

I'd suggest heading to a compuB or Harvey Norman and having a go on each of them, they should have all models set up and ready to go to have a play with.

Have a look at the refurb section on the Apple site. Fairly good reductions on it. Would you think of the 12.9" iPad Pro? Seems ideal for what it will be used for.

She insists on a full keyboard (not an attached one) so it has to be a laptop in some form.

Get the 16GB Macbook. It will do what she wants, no problem, for many years to come.

I bought the Macbook when it was released in 2015, the 1.1Ghz/8GB model and have never found it lacking. I use a 2016 MBP for work. It would be wasted on her based on what you say she'll be doing with it.
